Cross country: County teams trek around the state

A handful of Hamilton County cross country teams spread out across Indiana last Saturday, Aug. 16 to begin their seasons.

Here is a rundown of their performances at various tournaments:

Hamilton Southeastern hosted its annual Hokum Karem. The event consisted of two runners competing as a relay team, with the top three teams’ finishing places adding up to a team score.

The Royals girls team won their division, scoring seven points. Southeastern claimed the top two places, led by the winning duo of Zoe Gebhart and Raegan Hissong. Their winning time was 35 minutes, 50.4 seconds.

Aubrey Berger and Anissa Lammie placed second with a time of 36:20.7, while Kate Evans and Kate Lux took fourth in 37:51.0. Danika Harris and Ali Johnson finished fifth in 39:24.7.

In the boys race, the Royals placed second with 12 points; Lawrence North won with nine points. Liam Powers and Charlie Ritter were Southeastern’s low team, placing second in 29:36.2.

Andrew Butler and Isaac Smith finished fourth in 30:05.4. Hayden Hoback and PJ Key were sixth in 30:46.2, while Monroe Cluff and Will Henning took seventh in 31:20.7.

The Carmel girls won the Terre Haute South Valley Kickoff, which took place at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course, home of the IHSAA state finals.

The Greyhounds scored 59 points, just ahead of Bloomington South’s 73 points. Carmel had the top two runners: Annabel Pollert won the race in 18:12.73, while Larkin Taylor was the runner-up, finishing in 18:21.71.

Other Carmel scoring runners were: 12. Margo Halle 20:05.10, 18. Kaitlyn Oshimura 20:22.21, 26. Anna Yoon 20:39.69. 28. Noelle Avila 20:41.36, 32. Elise Maurer 20:51.52.

Hamilton Heights placed fifth as a team with 168 points. Allie Bushey finished 10th for the Huskies, clocking in at 19:31.43.

Other Heights runners were: 24. Lillian Higgins 20:37.65, 38. Anna Monnin 21:05.48, 53. Amira Leer 21:39.90, 56. Matilda Higgins 21:52.50, 59. Ayla Madara 22:03.31, 122. Selah Heuer 24:15.49, 141. Hattie Graham 24:58.53.

Hamilton Heights’ boys team also competed at Terre Haute, finishing 18th with 470 points.
