Charles William Hoffner, II

May 2, 1944 – April 24, 2021

Charles William Hoffner, II, 76, Westfield, passed away on Saturday, April 24, 2021. He was born on May 2, 1944, in Iowa City, Iowa, to Charles William and Bernice Anne (Cave) Hoffner.

Charlie was a true jack of all hobbies, making a hobby out of having hobbies. And he was so successful at all of them. He taught Sunday school, built fences, restored houses, was a Navy brat, planted orchards, played varsity football, collected coins and stamps, built furniture, an eternal bargain hunter, wrote books, poems and music, talked to random strangers on the New York subway, restored an MG, invested in the stock market, fixed vacuum cleaners, led Indian Guides, studied philosophy, and played the trumpet in the University of Iowa marching band.

Following graduation from the University of Iowa, where he earned his PhD in Electrical Engineering, Charlie worked for Bell Laboratories in Naperville, Ill., for more than 29 years. He held two design patents within the engineering field and intended for use with computer systems.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Bernice, in 1994; his father, Charles, in 1997; and his sister, Patricia, in 2017.

Charlie is survived by his four children, Elizabeth Hoffner, Stephanie Sunday, Christopher Hoffner, and Valerie Gordon; his grandchildren, Cody, Hannah, Tyler, Parker, Lydia, Miles, and Jenna; and his nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will gather for viewing and visitation at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 1, 2021, at the Dawson Funeral Home, 413 Walnut St., Olin, IA 52320, where the funeral service will begin at 11 a.m.
