In recognizing World Down Syndrome Day, I want to take a moment to celebrate the extraordinary contributions individuals with Down syndrome make to our community and to reaffirm our commitment to creating a more inclusive society where everyone can thrive.
March 21 (3/21) symbolizes the triplication of the 21st chromosome, which causes Down syndrome. This day reminds us to recognize the inherent dignity, worth, and unique abilities of every person.
In Hamilton County, we are fortunate to have organizations like Noble of Indiana, GiGi’s Playhouse, and Best Buddies that provide vital support and opportunities for individuals with Down syndrome and their families. Their work showcases what we can achieve when we focus on abilities rather than limitations.
As Republicans, we believe in the value of every human life and the importance of creating communities where all people can participate fully. Our party has long advocated for policies that expand educational opportunities, employment options, and community inclusion for people with disabilities.
I encourage you to take time to learn more about Down syndrome, support local organizations serving this community, and consider how we can all work together to break down barriers. Simple acts like wearing mismatched socks (representing the uniqueness of chromosomes) can help raise awareness.
To the families in our community who have loved ones with Down syndrome: we see you, we value you, and we are committed to standing with you to ensure that all individuals have the chance to reach their full potential.
Together, we can build a Hamilton County that truly works for everyone.
Mario Massillamany is the Chairman of the Hamilton County Republican Party.
