The local Sikh and Punjabi communities welcomed everyone to the Vaisakhi Festival last Saturday, May 9, at the Carmel Gazebo. Asawari Kaur, a leader in Carmel’s Punjabi community, described the festival as a meaningful occasion honoring both the birth of the Khalsa, or a group of Sikhs who embody courage, and the spring harvest.
The event included live music and dance, as well as plenty of food vendors. Vaisakhi marks springtime in Punjab, a joyful season of renewal and thanksgiving following winter. This festival was the first of its kind in the Carmel community, and it was organized by residents who now call the city home.
