The top girls golf teams in Indiana converged on Prairie View Golf Club Monday for the annual State Preview meet.
A total of 16 teams competed in the State Preview this season. Zionsville, the top-ranked team and defending state champion, ran away with the team title, scoring 309.
Carmel placed second, totaling 322. The Greyhounds had the meet medalist, as freshman Maya Fujisawa Keuling triumphed with a one-under par score of 71. Fujisawa Keuling made five birdies during her round, including birdies on holes 3 and 5 after a double bogey on the first hole.
“Maya is such a strong player,” said Greyhounds coach Kelly Kluesner. “She stays so positive and shakes off bad holes or bad shots easily. It’s the type of confidence everyone needs in this game.”
Allie Thompson, Karis Reid and Reese Roudebush each had one birdie. Carmel’s runner-up finish moved the ‘Hounds up to No. 2 in this week’s coaches poll (see related box).
“I love playing in the State Preview the first week of the season,” said Kluesner. “It’s always a good test for us and gives us a list of things to work on for the season.”
Noblesville scored 327 to finish in third place. Josie Kelley made one birdie for the Millers on her way to a score of 79, putting her in a four-way tie for ninth place. Presley White, Olivia Fowler, Myra Sealey and Lauren Turpin also had one birdie for Noblesville.
Hamilton Southeastern placed fourth as a team, scoring 328. Sophie Roberts was part of a four-way tie for fifth-place as she carded 78. Janelle Garcia, Maya Cieply and Bella Stanley all made one birdie.
Westfield finished seventh in the team standings with 348. Kate Brown led the Shamrocks with 84, making two birdies along the way.
