A consistent performance gave the Carmel girls golf team a victory in the prestigious State Preview meet, which took place Saturday at the Greyhounds’ home course, Prairie View Golf Club.
Carmel was ranked No. 3 in the pre-season coaches poll, but will likely move up after this win. The ‘Hounds carded a 306, besting runner-up and top-ranked Evansville North by five shots. Fourth-ranked Westfield placed third with a 315, and second-ranked Homestead finished fourth with a 320.
It marked the third tournament victory in a row for the Greyhounds.
“This team is really something special,” said Carmel coach Kelly Kluesner. “We love playing in the tournament, under state conditions, with the best teams in the state. It’s a great event to be a part of.”
Sydney Longstreth led the Greyhounds with a 74, which gave her second place individually. Longstreth began the meet with three consecutive birdies and finished the front nine with a 31.
Katie Kuc and Ava Hedrick were part of a large tie for third place, as each carded 75.
“Both players took advantage when the opportunity presented itself but also knew when to play it safe,” said Kluesner. “They were so focused and positive throughout their rounds today and it shined through in their score.”
Freshmen Michaela Headlee scored 82 and Claire Swathwood carded 85 to round out the Carmel scores.
“It was a great experience for them and we are proud of how they played in their first State Preview,” said Kluesner. We have no doubt that these two will master this course over the course of the season.”
