The City of Carmel will observe Jewish American Heritage Month in May, joining cities and institutions across the country urging Americans of all backgrounds to discover, explore and celebrate the vibrant and varied American Jewish experience from the dawn of our nation to the present day.
The month of observance began in 2006 when President George W. Bush proclaimed that May would be Jewish American Heritage Month, thanks to the efforts of the Jewish Museum of Florida and South Florida Jewish community leaders.
“It’s important that we take this opportunity to explore the more than 350-year history of Jewish contributions to American culture,” Mayor Jim Brainard said. “Celebrating Jewish American Heritage Month helps us strengthen our local community and promotes a strong sense of acceptance and a willingness to share our civic life, thanks to a deeper understanding of cultural heritage.”
Mayor Brainard and his administration have embraced an active role in promoting Jewish American acceptance and fighting anti-Semitism in the community. In addition to hosting the annual Holocaust Remembrance Ceremony annually since 1997, the mayor created the Advisory Commission on Human Relations and the Carmel Interfaith Alliance to promote and protect citizens of all faith-based and cultural backgrounds.
