To celebrate French heritage in Indiana, Bastille Day will take place from 6 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, July 14 at Sophia Square in Carmel. There will be live music performed by the Indianapolis Opera, French-themed kids’ activities, prizes, dancing, family fun and French gastronomy. There are no admission fees. French food and drinks will be available for sale.
Bastille Day commemorates the storming of the Bastille, a fortress prison in Paris, on July 14, 1789. This event marked the first step towards bringing democracy to France. Now, on July 14, la Fête Nationale is celebrated across the French-speaking world with festivals, balls, parades and firework displays.
This year’s Bastille Day celebration is presented by Alliance Française d’Indianapolis and the City of Carmel, with the participation of Fréderic Cholé, Deputy General of France for the Midwest.
