The Carmel softball scored an overwhelming victory in its season opener Monday, beating Plainfield 18-6 at Cherry Tree Softball Complex.
The Greyhounds took care of business early, scoring three runs in the first inning. Freshman Chloe Junkersfield and sophomores Megan Pike and Taylor Veitch all singled in one run.
Carmel poured in seven runs in the third inning. Sophomore Emily Proctor hit an RBI single, then sophomore Riley Petrites, blasted a two-RBI single. Junior Emily Goddard smacked a two-run double, then senior Winni Owens cracked a center field home run to score Goddard.
The Quakers got on the board with four runs in the top of the fourth inning. The Greyhounds responded with five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Jayden Kleiner hit a two-run double, followed by a two-run single from Owens, who immediately scored off a Pike double.
Plainfield hit a two-run tripe in the fifth inning to make the score 15-6. Carmel ended the game in the sixth inning with no outs after junior Avery Klein smacked a three-run homer.
Owens went 3-for-3 at the plate, while Petrites was 3-for-4. Emily Smith got the pitching win, throwing 3.1 innings and allowing just two hits.
The Hounds play at Zionsville tonight.
