At the Oct. 16 Carmel City Council meeting, the Carmel Police Department Crisis Intervention Unit (CIU) shared the work it has done for local officers and the community.

The CIU consists of Sergeant Katy Malloy, Officer Greg Stovall, and two mental health clinicians, Hannah Cowles and Jody Kennedy. The unit values the multidisciplinary approach that the officer/clinician pairing provides to the city.

The CIU’s primary focus is the community. It provides stabilization services, on-scene response, and case management for individuals experiencing mental health issues. Many of the cases are referred by officers who encounter these individuals and recognize the need for additional resources or services.

The members of CIU are also involved in the police department’s Officer Wellness Program and provide ongoing training, peer support, critical incident debriefs, resources, and referrals.
