The Carmel girls swim team took care of business at its own sectional finals last Saturday.

The Greyhounds qualified all 27 of their swims on to the IHSAA state preliminaries, which take place Friday at the IU Natatorium. All of those swims are under the state cut time in their respective events, giving Carmel a head start to continue its record state championship streak.

The ‘Hounds won 11 of the 12 events. Molly Sweeney was a double winner, taking the individual medley in 1 minute, 59.76 seconds and the breaststroke in 1:01.65. Carmel also swept all three relays, with Olympic gold medalist Alex Shackell competing in all three.

Shackell also won an individual event, claiming the butterfly race in 50.68 seconds. Other Carmel winners were Lynsey Bowen in the 200 freestyle, Alexandria Clark in the 50 free, Helena Gibson in diving, Faith Gorey in the 100 free and Alexandra Ward in the 500 free.

Kokomo’s Aubrey Simmons broke up the Greyhounds sweep by winning the backstroke in 55.39 seconds. But Carmel’s three swimmers in that event – Kayla Barr, Leah Debosch and Ellie Clarke – all finished well under the state cut time to qualify for state.

Carmel scored 581 points for the team championship, extending its consecutive sectional title streak to 41. The ‘Hounds will be going for a record 39th straight state title next week.

Westfield finished second with 408 points. The Shamrocks qualified all three of their relays to state under the cut time. Evelyn Wheat finished fifth in the butterfly, but her time of 56.22 seconds was over a second under the cut.

Noblesville placed third with 374 points. Haddie Vohs qualified for state in two individual events, placing second in the butterfly and third in the 200 free, both under the state cut time. The Millers also qualified their 200 and 400 free relays for state by cut time. Eryn McMahon finished second in diving and will advance to Tuesday’s diving regional at Hamilton Southeastern. The winner Gibson and her teammate, fourth-place Emily Linder, also qualified for the regional.
