Carmel community shows support for Adam Aasen in City Council bid

Adam Aasen, a candidate for Carmel City Council in May 2019, held a campaign kickoff party at his business, Donatello’s Italian Restaurant, on Sunday, Oct. 7.

Elected officials in attendance included Hamilton County Councilor Fred Glynn, Coroner John Chalfin and Carmel Clay School Board President Layla Spanenberg.

Aasen, an entrepreneur and former reporter for Current in Carmel newspaper, is seeking to represent the southeast part of Carmel on the council. The City Council is currently considering new district maps heading into the 2019 election.

Jeff Worrell, the current councilor in that district, has announced he would be seeking an at-large seat in 2019. The Council released proposed maps which showed no change to the district Aasen would represent if elected.

Aasen spoke to a crowd of community leaders about a positive message of coming together.

“There are going to be times when I disagree with the mayor or my fellow city councilors, but that’s okay because nobody is going to agree 100 percent of the time,” Aasen said. “But when I do disagree I’ll do so respectfully and with the end goal of helping my constituents, not helping myself. It’s all about representing the people.”

Aasen spoke highly of the councilors currently representing Carmel and he praised Carmel Mayor Jim Brianard’s vision for the city.

“I suspect many of you in the room love Carmel just as much as I do, and that doesn’t mean everything is perfect and there’s not things we could change, but we’re not going to let any minor complaints or concerns overshadow the fact that we live in one of the best cities in the United States,” he said. “Personally I think it’s the best place to live.”
