Dear Editor:

While some members of the Indiana General Assembly are working on important issues such as healthcare and public safety, others are continuing with their “culture war” issues.

For example, everyone knows that dirty fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, propane and fossil gas, are the main cause of global warming. That is uncontested. But some of our legislators recently passed a bill to call these dirty fossil fuels “clean energy resources.”

Why is it important to call dirty fossil fuels “clean,” you might ask? Because if you call something by a different name, it is more palatable to low-information voters who might then allow their legislators to pass bills canceling the closing of old, outdated, and inefficient coal-burning power plants, or converting these dirty plants to very slightly less-dirty fossil gas plants.

Renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, along with battery storage, are already the cleanest and cheapest sources of new energy.

Apparently, our legislators are OK with continuing to pollute the environment for ourselves, our children, and our grandchildren.
