Auditions for “Anne of Green Gables” will be held on Saturday, April 20 and Sunday, April 21. (Photos provided)

Carmel Community Players (CCP) and Director Amber K. Roth invite you to audition for Anne of Green Gables, adapted by Joseph Robinette, from the novel by L.M. Montgomery.

When a high-spirited, red-headed orphan girl is sent to live with the Cuthberts at Green Gables, they claim a mistake has been made since they had asked for a boy. But before Marilla and her quiet brother Matthew can send her back to the orphanage, Anne’s winsome ways capture their hearts, and her winning personality and funny antics captivate all who come to know her.

Anne of Green Gables serves as CCP’s “Rising Star Production,” available only for youth actors aged 12 to 18 and one 6- to 8-year-old.

Characters

Note: Some actors will be cast in more than one role.

  • Anne Sherly – An orphan girl, flighty, dramatic, and headstrong, out of place in prim and proper Avonlea. She is passionate, stubborn, warm, loyal, intelligent, an articulate chatterbox, hugely loving, in love with beauty, and a dreamer of great imagination. When she makes mistakes, they’re doozies, but she is full of integrity, and always wants to be a good person.
  • Matthew Cuthbert – Bachelor farmer who oversees Green Gables with his spinster sister Marilla. He is a hardworking, quiet, caring man, and is painfully shy around women. Anne considers Matthew a kindred spirit and always turns to him when she wants a sympathetic ear.
  • Marilla Cuthbert – Stern spinster who oversees Green Gables with her brother. She is a deeply feeling woman who does not usually express emotion. Underneath she has a wry sense of humor and a loving heart. Although she raises Anne strictly, she adores her adopted daughter, and by the end of the play, she has become softer and more expressive.
  • Rachel Lynde – Avonlea’s resident gossip and busybody. She is most happy when prying into other people’s affairs. She has an affectionate, quarrelsome friendship with Marilla. Mrs. Rachel is outspoken about everything from politics to fashion, and, although childless, she never fails to advise Marilla on how to raise Anne.
  • Phillips – The Avonlea schoolmaster. He is a contrast: inattentive/authoritarian or “gushy” nice. He does not take to Anne’s classroom outbursts.
  • Prissy Andrews – One of Anne’s oldest classmates. Mr. Phillips’s favorite student. Studying to go to Queen’s College on the mainland.
  • Diana Barry – Anne’s classmate and closest friend, friendly, earnest, sincere, a bit of a follower, but loyal to Anne.
  • Barry – Diana’s slightly stuck-up, well-meaning mother. A moralistic woman who has reservations about her daughter’s friendship with Anne.
  • Minnie May Barry (aged 6- to 8-years-old) – Dianna’s younger sister. She is full of mischief and energy. Is saved from death’s doorstep by Anne.
  • Josie Pye – Anne’s classmate, catty and flirtatious, Josie fervently pursues Gilbert and is put off when his attention turns to Anne. Moves on to Charlie.
  • Ruby Gillis – Anne’s classmate, pretty, but not terribly bright, Ruby is often the victim of Charlie’s rowdy pranks.
  • Moody MacPherson – One of Anne’s classmates, sweet and kind to all. Moody, unlike Charlie and Gilbert, is quiet and focused in class. Looks to be a minister one day.
  • Charlie Sloane – Anne’s classmate, a rowdy practical joker, looks to be in Parliament when he grows up.
  • Jane Andrews – Anne’s classmate, she befriended Anne through Diana Barry and Ruby Gillis. She’s also Prissy Andrews’s little sister.
  • Gilbert Blythe – He is Anne’s classmate and occasional rival, the heartthrob of the Avonlea schoolhouse, he is athletic, popular, and very intelligent, usually standing toe to toe with Anne in academic and professional achievement.
  • Miss Susan Stacy – An Avonlea school mistress, creative, warm, and patient, Miss Stacey is a stark contrast to the strict authoritarian, Mr. Phillips.
  • Aunt Josephine Barry – The great aunt of Diana Barry. Strict at first but as time goes on, we see the warm heart she holds for others and their friends.
  • Allan – Wife to the new Rev. Allan. Takes over Sunday school teachings. Very excited to teach the future of Canada about Jesus.
  • Blewett – Nasty neighbor. She has many children and due to the lack of help is sleep-deprived and bitter to the world.
  • Reverend Bentley – Town preacher. Doesn’t have a strong memory. Due to be retired because of his memory.
  • Jerry Buote – French farmhand to Matthew. Hired for his strength and youth. He is a sweet boy who would do anything for the Cuthberts.
  • Tillie Boulter – One of Anne’s classmates. She is good friends with everyone in school. Hates when the boys pick on her and her friends.
  • Mary Jo – Maid to the Barry household. Tends to Diana and Minnie May the most. Gentle soul that worries often.
  • Reverend Allan – New Reverend in town. Took over after Rev. Bentley retired. Is nervous but excited about this new opportunity.
  • Stationmaster – Jovial and easygoing.
  • Miss Rogerson – Sunday school teacher. Leaves when Reverend Bentley departs. Wants to show the Church respect. Doesn’t tolerate students not knowing the basics of the bible.
  • Jimmy Glover – Friends with the other boys at school. Plays along with teasing the girls.
  • Bessie Wright – School house classmate who wishes to be with Gilbert like the rest of the girls.
  • Carrie Sloane – Sister of Charlie. She is sweet and friends to all but loves a good game of “I dare you!”
  • Sadler – An out-of-town businessman with ties to the town and stops by to discuss matters of buying Green Gables. Is kind and respectful.
  • President of Queen’s – Official speaker. Strong in words and honored to be helping students as they step out into the real world.
