Dear Editor:

Hamilton County has a jewel in the middle of our county, and it is the red building on the east side of U.S. 31 and 256th Street, which is Wilson Farm Market.

Have you visited it lately? They have Amish cheeses and many jams and jellies and the well-known fried chicken dinner as a take out for the many motorists who are heading north to Kokomo or south to Indianapolis. Wilson Farm Market also supplies fresh vegetables of the season and frozen meats. My favorite purchases are the fresh baked pastries from the bakery and the most delicious ice cream cone selections.

This sounds like an advertisement for Wilson, and it is because in 2024 it will be no more. I am disappointed that our County Commissioners and Council are not supporting this small business since 1968. The Indiana Department of Transportation does not know the importance of Wilson Farm Market as it supports a grocery in a desert zone.

The development of U.S. 31 becoming a limited-access highway is closing out a lot of businesses but also hindering a much-needed access for locals in this area to U.S. 31 heading both directions for medical needs, as well as access for the school systems of Hamilton Heights and Sheridan. U.S. 31 is creating a dividing line between these two communities with no cross overs or lanes to access the local roads that support the community, schools, farms, and small businesses.

Why did this happen? Who made the decision of this community division and the elimination of businesses along U.S. 31 with no recourse in a financial location?

  1. We love Wilson Farm Market! We are extremely disappointed with this decision.

  2. My wife and I have enjoyed and patronized Wilson’s Farm Market since moving to Noblesville in 2007. Considering its presence since 1968 and having no bearing on the Department of Transportation”s decision to expand its roadway project, it would seem fitting for the state to at least supplement this business to re-establish itself with a new location. If not, once again we will have witnessed a lost opportunity to support a very popular, successful business.

It’s simply a matter of safety. US31 is now so heavily traveled that cars can’t be allowed to pull out or turn off just anywhere. Sorry, but somebody is going to get killed if something isn’t done to safely limit access.

  4. If that’s the case how about state roads 38 & 32 they are only 2 lane. How dangerous is that?

This is very sad to hear ? At least relocate this much loved business!

  6. Indiana state government is fast becoming the largest real estate company in the
U.S. IEDC now owns 11,000 ac. in Boone county and looking to buy more. The average price for a house is now 288k. All this leap project and Lilly’s has done is drive up real estate prices so far.
It seems the state is empathetic to any business or family.
Your backyard may be the next target. It’s a secret.

  7. When you have one party rule for decades, this is what usually happens. They don’t have to account to anyone.
