Boys tennis: Carmel, Guerin Catholic get dual victories

Thursday was another busy day for Hamilton County tennis.
Defending state champion Carmel beat Cathedral 5-0, keeping itself undefeated in three dual meets this season. Hayden White and Will Brune won the No. 2 doubles match in three sets, with the other matches decided in straights.
Hamilton Heights fell to Pendleton Heights 3-2. The Huskies got two singles wins, from No. 1 Hawkins Hochstedler and No. 3 Adam Gross.
“Hats off to Pendleton for pulling that match out tonight. They’re always a well-coached team, so we knew coming in we were going to have a challenge.  Although we didn’t get the team win, we made a lot of progress tonight across the board.  The score may not say it, but our doubles teams took big steps in the right direction.  And our singles guys are developing their character as scrappy tennis players who don’t make anything easy on their opponents. In particular, I was really impressed by what Adam Gross did for us at #3 tonight.  That kid continues to develop as a player.”
Heights junior varsity winners were Sam Dodson in singles and the doubles teams of Josh Russell/Drew Pennington and Liam Huss/Ethan Hall.
Guerin Catholic beat Brebeuf Jesuit 4-1 in a Circle City Conference dual meet. Wyatt Metzger led the way, winning the No. 1 singles match 6-0, 6-0.
“This match was extremely close,” said Golden Eagles coach Joe Lustig. “Obviously the No. 1 doubles match could have gone either way, but so could two of the singles matches. Michael Wade at No. 2 played a very tough David Hopper. I think Michael played a very smart match and kept David from getting away from him. Wyatt Metzger continues to play very well at No. 1 and is proving to be a strong leader for the team.”
Westfield lost a close dual to Zionsville 3-2. Freshman Quentin Markle earned his second win in as many match at No. 2 singles. The No. 1 doubles team of Carson and Connor Maris won 7-6, 6-3.
The match was tied at 2-2 with only the No. 1 singles match remaining. Senior Parker Kalis played great fighting off two match points to bring the third set to 6-6. Kalis came up just short in the tiebreaker in a match that could have gone either way.
