NOBLESVILLE – The Hamilton County boys golf tournament took place Friday at Pebble Brook, and continued to prove that this area is arguably the strongest in Indiana for golf.
The county currently boasts four of the top eight schools in the latest coaches poll, and they lived up to those rankings on Friday. Top-rated Guerin Catholic won the meet with a 283, following up its school-record performance of 281 just two days ago at the Woodland Invitational.
Second-ranked Carmel was right behind with a 286, while No. 7 Westfield placed third with a 289. Hamilton Southeastern, ranked No. 8, was in the mix as well, placing fourth with a 296.
The Golden Eagles had two players break 70, including the medalist, Jacob Modleski. He lit up the North Course with a five-under par 65, making seven birdies along the way.
“I really couldn’t have played much better,” said Modleski. “Obviously parts of my game hadn’t been quite where I wanted them to be the last couple days, so for today to have gone as well as it did, I couldn’t have really asked for much more.”
Guerin Catholic went 1-2 at the tournament, as Leo Wessel was the individual runner-up with a two-under par 68. Wessel has six birdies for the meet.
In fact, every Golden Eagles player drained at least one birdie: Connor McNeely (who scored 74) made four, Andrew White (76) had two and Christian Hein (77) had one.
“We’re playing pretty well,” said GC coach Mark Mathews. “We’ve got great rounds posted. We shot a 67 at Woodland on Wednesday, we shot a 65 today. But all four players are not playing their best at the same time yet, so we haven’t jelled yet. Anything in the low 280s is very good, so I’m really proud of the guys.”
The Greyhounds had the third-place individual in Patrick Michael, who carded a one-under par 69. Michael had three birdies for the event. Sam Booth and Shoji Fujita were part of a five-way tie for sixth place, as both scored 72. Fujita made three birdies and Booth had two. Joe Armfield (73) also drained three birdies for the Greyhounds, while Owen Sander (78) had one.
The Shamrocks also landed three players in that large tie for sixth place: Nolan Hall, Hunter Cook and Alec Cesare each carded a 72. Hall collected three birdies for the event, with Cesare and Cook both making two. Timmy Leonard (73) had three birdies as well, with Joe Sawyer (76) making one.
The Royals had a top-five finisher in Lane Zedrick, who carded a 71 for fifth place. Zedrick made two birdies in his round. Tyler Lacy (79) drained three birdies, while Cole Starnes (73) and Thomas Reising (75) and Tyler Lacy (79) both made two. Nate Benson scored a 77.
Fishers placed fifth as a team with a strong score of 303. Will Schade finished in fourth place individually with an even-par 70, making four birdies along the way. Connor McMillan (75) had three birdies in his round, while Mathew Albright (79) and Matt Wolf (80) each made one. Ryan Witt also scored a 79.
Noblesville took sixth by scoring 322. Alex Peck led the Millers with a 77 followed by Will Perkins with a score of 79. Both made one birdie.
Hamilton Heights finished with a team score of 338. Garrett James led the Huskies with a 76, while Ethan Millsaps made one birdie. University scored a 396; Ben Ewer was the Trailblazers’ low man with an 89, including a birdie.
Sheridan had two golfers compete at the meet. Tyler Garner scored 104 and Grant Ferren had a 105.
