Boys basketball roundup: Carmel gets first win of season, Sheridan & Southeastern fall

Carmel picked up its first win of the season Friday night, winning an away game at Lawrence Central 52-46.

The Greyhounds steadily built their lead during the first half, holding a 12-8 advantage after one quarter and a 29-16 lead at halftime. The Bears chipped away during the second half, but Carmel was able to hold on for the victory.

Three Greyhounds reached double figures, led by Alex Couto’s 19 points and four 3-pointers. Evan Harrell put together a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Ryan Clevenger added 10 points. The ‘Hounds outrebounded LC 29-15; Mitchell Mulloy pulled 10 rebounds and Jamichael Fountain collected five rebounds.

Carmel is 1-1 and plays its home opener tonight, hosting Plainfield.

Hamilton Southeastern dropped its Hoosier Crossroads Conference opener on Friday, falling to Avon 49-36 at the Orioles’ gym.

The Royals led 13-6 after one quarter, but Avon came back in the second period, cutting Southeastern’s lead to 20-19 by halftime. The Orioles then outscored the Royals 11-3 in the third quarter and added another 19 points in the fourth.

Braeden Totten led Southeastern with 15 points, while Donovan Hamilton had seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Kam Anthony also made two blocks.

The Royals are 1-2 and host Marion tonight.

Sheridan opened its boys basketball season Friday by falling to Clinton Prairie 57-51 in a Hoosier Heartland Conference game on the road.

The Gophers blasted through the first quarter to lead 15-2 by the end of the period. The Blackhawks chipped away at Prairie’s advantage over the next three quarters, but the Gophers were able to stay ahead.

Freshman Trey Page led the scoring in his first-ever varsity game with 14 points, making three 3-pointers along the way. Damon Winston added 13 points and Trent DeCraene scored 12. Tyler Garner collected eight rebounds, with Winston grabbing five. DeCraene dished out seven assists.

Sheridan plays its home opener tonight against Anderson Prep Academy.
