Senior Sam Mervis had 16 assists and 12 points to lead the University boys to a 69-42 road win at Speedway Saturday night.
Jacob Sager had a game-high 15 points and five rebounds and Max Greenamoyer had 12 points as the Trailblazers improved to 2-0 on the season.
The Trailblazers got off to a fast start scoring six points in the first 70 seconds. Mervis found Sager for a layin just 20 seconds in. Camden Brown had a rebound basket and Max Greenamoyer had a steal and bucket for a quick 6-0 lead. University ended the period with a pair of lay-ins off tremendous passes in the last 20 seconds. Larry Pierce scored off a pass from Korey Ash-Simpson before Ash-Simpson was rewarded on a great feed from Mervis with two seconds left in the period. Sager had seven first quarter points.
University had its first double-digit lead at 21-11 when Mervis again found Sager. The Trailblazers took a 33-18 halftime lead on a buzzer beating deep 3-pointer by Greenamoyer, who had 10 points in the second quarter.
A slow start plagued the Blazers in the third quarter as they went scoreless for nearly four minutes before Mervis had a driving lay-in for his first points of the game. Pierce had six points in the third quarter as University led 47-29 after three.
Mervis had eight more points in the fourth quarter as University continued to expand its advantage.
University coach Brandon Lafferman lauded the play of his senior point guard.
“Sam was a great floor leader tonight,” said Lafferman. “He controlled the game. I’m proud that we brought defensive energy for four quarters tonight. We had a good team effort against a Speedway team that we knew would play hard for the entire game.”
The Trailblazers are off until Friday night when they travel to Brownsburg to play Bethesda Christian. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. as there is no junior varsity game. It will be the first of back-to-back road games next weekend as University will travel to Anderson Saturday to play Liberty Christian in a triple-header with both boys and girls varsity games and a boys junior varsity contest.
