‘Blazers cruise past Covenant Christian

The University girls returned to action Saturday afternoon at Covenant Christian and came away with a 57-24 win to improve their record to 12-2.
Patty Chikamba had another double-double for the Trailblazers with a 20-point, 10-rebound effort. Chikamba also added four steals and three rebounds. Kelsey DuBois and Jordan Patterson gave University three players in double figures as each scored 14 points.
Covenant Christian had an early 6-4 lead before University called timeout. The Blazers turned up the defensive intensity and held Covenant Christian without a field goal for the next 20 minutes of game action.
Chikamba tied the game at 6-6 off an assist from Emily Adamowicz. DuBois fed Patterson for an easy basket to put University ahead for good. Chikamba had 12 points in the first quarter, including an old fashioned three point play off an assist from Patterson with 42 seconds left to give University a 16-8 lead after the opening stanza.
The Trailblazers scored the first 9 points on the second quarter to put the game out of reach. Chikamba split two free throws, Alex Feeney and Patterson each went two-for-two at the charity stripe before DuBois knocked down a three pointer. A DuBois foul shot ended the 9-0 run. University stretched the lead to 37-11 at halftime on a deep three pointer from Patterson just ahead of the buzzer.
University pulled down 35 rebounds. In addition to Chikamba’s 10 caroms, Adamowicz had five rebounds and DuBois, Abby Hannon and Arrion Sherrod each had four. DuBois and Chikamba each had four steals with Adamowicz and Sherrod having three each.
Covenant Christian fell to 4-11.
University will be back in action Tuesday night when they travel to Warren County to take on Seeger Memorial. The Patriots will bring a 14-3 record in to the contest. It will be the first of three games next week for the Trailblazers, who will host the 17-0 Indianapolis HomeSchool Wildcats on Thursday and will play for the Pioneer Conference championship Saturday against the PAAC South champion (to be determined).
University’s game with Class 3A No. 4 Benton Central (19-0), originally scheduled for this week, has been rescheduled for Jan. 18 at The U Center. The Blazers’ postponed game with Yorktown has been rescheduled for Jan. 22 as a road game at 11:30 a.m.
