‘Blazers bounce back to beat Shortridge on Senior Night

University’s girls celebrated Senior Night with a come from behind 49-40 victory over Shortridge.

The Trailblazers trailed 19-18 at halftime after being behind by as many as eight points in the second quarter. University took their first lead at 20-19 in the third quarter when Mack Feeney beat the defense down the floor on an inbound play and scored off a long pass from senior Keira Bright.

After the Blue Devils tied the contest at 22, Anyah Turley scored to put University ahead for good at 24-22. The Blazers eventually pushed their lead to 34-26 on a Charlotte Conyers steal and basket. University led 36-32 after the third with Feeney scoring six points and Conyers five in the period.

Fourth quarter baskets by Feeney and Conyers gave the Blazers a 41-33 advantage. After a Shortridge three pointer, Conyers made a field goal and Turley scored five straight points for a 47-36 lead. Senior Jiyou Lee scored her first career basket to cap the University scoring.

Conyers had 18 points off the bench. Feeney posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds while Turley added 10 points. Bright handed out eight assists.

University improves to 9-7 on the season. Shortridge is 10-7.

The Trailblazers are back in action Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. when they host Bethesda Christian in the Pioneer Academic Athletic Conference championship game. The Blazers will be going for their third consecutive PAAC title and fifth in the past six years.
