The Westfield baseball team has had a busy, yet productive week, with three wins in three days.
On Monday, the Shamrocks beat Kokomo 4-2. Westfield scored all of its runs in the third inning, starting with a single from Trey Dorton to send Keaton Mahan home. Collin Lindsey doubled in Dorton and Maximus Webster, then Cole Ballard hit an RBI double to send home Evan Russ, who came in to run for Lindsey.
Ballard and Lindsey both finished the game with two hits. Jacob Culp pitched three and two-thirds innings for the win, allowing one hit while striking out seven. Ballard got the save, only needing four pitches to get the final two outs.
Westfield began a Hoosier Crossroads Conference series with Avon Tuesday, first beating the Orioles 14-4 in a six-inning road game. The ‘Rocks scored three runs in the first inning, then added five more in the third to take control of the contest.
Ballard drove in four runs, while Dorton batted in three runs and scored three more. Mahan also scored three runs, with Tyler Gentry driving in another three. Gage Stanifer got the win, with seven strikeouts in two and two-thirds innings.
The Shamrocks came into the second game of their HCC series with Avon riding high from the big win on the Orioles turf. The ‘Rocks had a big second inning, with six touching home plate in their 8-3 win over Avon to sweep the two-game conference series.
Westfield was able to score its first couple of runs on a wild pitch and a sacrifice bunt. Mahan’s single scored Gentry and then Mahan would score on another wild pitch for a quick 4-0 start.
Dorton would keep with the trend, scoring on a third wild pitch of the inning. The Shamrocks scoring was capped off at six runs on a Mac Clarke single to right sent Maximus Webster home to give the ‘Rocks a comfortable 6-0 lead through two.
Westfield would run it to 7-0 when Gentry would steal home on a double steal when Mahan stole second.
Kade Robinson would pitch a solid four and two-thirds innings for the win. The Orioles chased Robinson in the top of the fifth, getting three runs across, but that wouldn’t be enough as Westfield held on for the win, 8-3.
Mahan, Dorton and Clarke all three collected two hits, including a double each by Mahan and Clarke.
The loss drops Avon to 12-13 overall and 6-8 in HCC play.
Westfield improved to 16-8 and finished 8-6 in its HCC schedule. The ‘Rocks hit the road at Jeffersonville (12-6) on Saturday for a noon game before competing in the Class 4A Sectional 8 tournament next week.
