Baseball: Stanifer leads ‘Rocks to big HCC win

Westfield’s Gage Stanifer took care of business on the mound, and the Class 4A No. 4 Shamrocks’ scoring came through in the end to give them a 2-0 Hoosier Crossroads Conference win over Hamilton Southeastern Thursday at Westfield.
The Shamrocks scored both of their runs in the sixth inning by hitting four consecutive singles. Casey Fanelli started it off with a bunt single, then moved to second base on Cody South’s right field hit. Mac Clarke then bunted in Fanelli, sending South to third. Collin Lindsey was next, and he bunted home South.
Lindsey was 2-for-3 at the plate, while Quentin Markle hit a double. Meanwhile, Stanifer pitched outstanding, throwing all seven innings and striking out 13, while giving up just two walks and one hit.
Cole Earlewine got the Royals’ lone hit, a fourth-inning single. Sam Reagan also pitched a complete game, striking out six.
Westfield improved to 15-3-1, while Southeastern is 10-14-1. The teams will finish the conference series tonight at HSE’s Ken Seitz Field.

Carmel, ranked No. 2 in 4A, won a Thursday game at Harrison 4-2.
The Raiders scored the game’s first run in the first inning, but the Greyhounds took the lead for good with two runs in the third. JD Rogers scored on a wild pitch, then Nick Mitchell got home on Jackson Micheels’ right field single.
Carmel added a fifth-inning run when Connor Gioia scored on an error. Gioia scored again in the seventh inning when Mitchell sent him home with a sacrifice fly.
Evan Neukam had two hits, while Alex Richter hit a double. Jack Bruington went five innings for the pitching win.
The Greyhounds are 19-2-1 and host Mount Vernon Monday.

University, ranked No. 5 in 2A, cruised past Cardinal Ritter 12-0 in five innings Thursday.
The Trailblazers got going in the second inning when Matt Moore hit a two-run home run. Weber Morse hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning. Moore went 2-for-4 and drove in four runs for the game. Jake Hooker scored three runs.
Four University pitchers held the Raiders to no hits for the game. Grady Hay pitched the first two innings and got the win, striking out four.
The Trailblazers are 16-7 and play Andrean Saturday morning at Loeb Stadium in Lafayette.

Noblesville dropped an HCC game at Brownsburg Thursday, 5-3.
The Bulldogs got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Millers tied the game in the top of the third when Dean White scored on an error and Mason Bohland got home on a wild pitch. But Brownsburg came back with three runs in the bottom of the third.
Noblesville added a run in the fourth inning; White drew a bases-loaded walk to send Keegan Speek home. Josh Kern hit a double. Ethan Leslie pitched a complete game, tossing seven strikeouts.
The Millers are 11-13 and host the Bulldogs tonight to complete the HCC series.

Fishers fell to Franklin Central 2-1 Thursday in an HCC game at the Flashes’ field.
Franklin Central scored its first run in the third inning. The Tigers tied the game in the top of the seventh inning; Jack Braun got on base with a single, stole second base and scored when JP Preston got a base hit into right field. But the Flashes scored the winning run on a bases-loaded walk.
Preston had two hits for Fishers.
The Tigers are 13-12 and host Franklin Central tonight to complete the series.

Hamilton Heights saw its 14-game win streak come to an end on Thursday, as the 3A No. 9 Huskies lost 5-2 at Mount Vernon.
The Marauders led 2-0 after four innings. Heights tied the game in the top of the fifth; Drew VanOeveren scored on Isaac Tuma’s RBI groundout, then Joe Mayo was sent home by Sam Allen’s left field hit. But Mount Vernon scored twice in the bottom of the fifth and held the lead from there.
Sam Allen went 2-for-3 at the plate, while VanOeveren hit a double.
The Huskies are 14-7 and travel to 2A No. 3 Lafayette Central Catholic tonight to play the Hoosier Conference championship game.
