Baseball roundup: Rocks & Huskies win get solid road wins, Blackhawks & Tigers beat opponents on home fields

On Monday night, the Westfield Shamrocks headed down to Greenwood to face the Greenwood Christian Academy Cougars.

It took just one big inning offensively for the Shamrocks, as they held the host Cougars to just one hit to secure the 6-1 road win.

The Cougars got on the board first in the bottom of the third, but that would only fuel the ‘Rocks at the plate.

A two-out rally got Westfield going offensively. Alex Rudolph grounded a hit to center. Then, with two outs, Ben Wasserstrom lined a single up the middle to plate Tyler Gentry to tie it 1-1. Ethan Colling drove in Wasserstrom for what proved to be the game-winning run and a 2-1 lead. Nick Fero kept it going with a base hit to left, scoring Colling.

Drew Law’s triple to right sent Fero home and Brayden Hibler’s single drove in Law for a 5-1 advantage through four.

Jake Russell scored the final run in the top of the seventh for the final of 6-1.

Nathan Bodenberg (2-0) threw three innings, striking out four. He allowed the lone hit and run (unearned) to GCA.

Drew Law, Alex Rudolph and Ben Wasserstrom led Westfield in hitting, each with two hits.

Westfield (11-9) was slated to play Columbus North Tuesday night, but the weather had other things in mind, postponing the game with the Bulldogs. The Shamrocks get back to Hoosier Crossroads Conference play on Friday on the road at Hamilton Southeastern (9-12, 3-7 HCC).

Hamilton Heights also hit the road to begin the week on Monday with a trip to Fairmount to face the Madison-Grant Argylls.

The Huskies scored early and often, showing the host Argylls they can hit and did so with consistency in an 8-1 win.

Two runs in the first got the hosts on their heels from the get-go. Phoenix Vondersaar scored first on a John Irion sacrifice fly. Dillon Pitts drove in Dean Mason for 2-0 on a line drive to center field.

A fielder’s choice from Mason scored Owen Robey to put the Huskies up 3-0 in the second.

Another run was put on the board in the third when Kyle Michael singled on the ground to left to score Irion for a 4-0 lead through three.

Pitts grabbed another RBI in the fifth, doubling home Irion to make it 5-0.

Madison-Grant scored one in the bottom of the sixth, but that gave Heights an urge to score some insurance runs.

Heights touched home three more times in the top of the seventh. Irion drove in Nick Hulen. Pitts got his third run batted in, lining a hit to center and scoring Irion. Vondersaar scored Pitts on an infield single for the final score of 8-1.

Nick Hulen (3-2) got the win on the mound, throwing four innings, striking out six and giving up just two hits.

Vondersaar and Pitts each had three hits, while Irion had two to lead the Huskies at the plate.
