Baseball: Guerin Catholic gets one over Greenfield, then ties

The Guerin Catholic baseball team hosted Greenfield-Central in a doubleheader last Saturday.

In the first game, the Golden Eagles held off a huge comeback by the Cougars to win 11-10. Greenfield scored a run in the top of the first inning, which Guerin Catholic answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Sam Tabor batted in Will Fremion for the first run, then Ian Taylor’s left field hit scored Tabor and Aiden Ochall.

The Golden Eagles put up three runs in the third inning. AJ Nunley singled in Tabor and Davis Wagner, then Daulton Phillips drove in Nunley with a center field hit. In the fourth inning, Anthony Ferrucci singled Fremion home, and GC led 7-1.

The Cougars got a run back in the top of the sixth, but the Golden Eagles put up four more in the bottom of the inning. Ferrucci’s left field hit brought in Finn Holden and Cuinn Morrow, Fremion scored on Tabor’s RBI groundout and Wagner batted in Ferrucci with a right field single.

With that, Guerin Catholic led 11-2. Greenfield-Central came roaring back with eight runs in the top of the seventh, but the Golden Eagles got the third out at home plate to clinch the win.

Fremion was 3-for-4 at the plate in addition to scoring three runs; one of his hits was a double. Max Cosell threw five innings for the pitching win.

The second game finished in a 4-4 tie after six innings. Both teams scored a run in the second inning; Morrow got home after Nate Gremelspacher reached on error.

The Cougars scored two runs in the fourth inning and one in the fifth to lead 4-1. Guerin Catholic tied it up with three runs in the fifth inning. Wagner led off with a double, then a Tabor triple sent him home. Tate Troxell’s right field hit drove in Tabor. Two walks loaded the bases, and Gremelspacher drew another walk to score Troxell.

Wagner hit two doubles. Morrow pitched four innings, striking out four.

The Golden Eagles are 22-2-1 and play at Noblesville on Monday.
