Baseball: Greyhounds get all-county, MIC victories

The Carmel baseball team got off to a good start in its game with Fishers on Monday, and that sent the 4A No. 5 Greyhounds to a 7-3 win over the Tigers at Hartman Field.
Carmel scored four runs in the first inning. Griffin Wolf singled in Nathan MacLaren, then Cody Kantz, who earlier doubled to get on base, went home on Evan Neukam’s RBI fielder’s choice. Alex Richter then doubled in Jackson Micheels and Reece Bellin.
Both teams scored one run in the second inning. Fishers’ Gavin Clayton batted in JP Preston, then Connor Gioia scored after Micheels reached on error.
In the fourth inning, Wolf hit a triple that scored JD Rogers and Micheels, putting the ‘Hounds up 7-1. The Tigers added two more runs in the sixth inning; Preston got home after Zach Cox reached on error, then Jack Braun scored on Clayton’s RBI groundout.
MacLaren, Wolf and Richter all finished with two hits; Richter hit a double. Cameron Heaney went six innings for the win, allowing just four hits.
Braun had two hits for Fishers. Gavin Kuzniewski struck out five in five innings.
On Tuesday, Carmel cruised past Pike 12-3 in a Metropolitan Conference game at the Red Devils’ field.
The Greyhounds led 6-0 after five innings, then hit two home runs in the sixth. Cam Carmichael led off the inning with a center field homer. A pair of walks sandwiched around a single by Kantz led the bases, and Tripp Schroeder cleared them all by hitting a grand slam.
Daniel Cunningham hit an RBI double in the second inning, which sent Connor Gioia home for the first of his two runs scored. MacLaren, Kantz and Schroeder all had two hits, with Kantz, Rogers, Wolf and Carmichael also scoring twice. Micheels and Richter drove in two runs each. Noah Bradbury went six innings for the win, striking out 10 against two hits and no walks.
Carmel is 8-0-1 in conference play and 16-1-1 overall. The Greyhounds host Pike today to complete the MIC series. Fishers is 12-9 and hosts Avon tonight to start an HCC series.

Westfield got a 6-1 Senior Night win Monday over Pendleton Heights.
The 4A No. 2 Shamrocks got on top early, scoring three runs in the first inning. Isaac Minder was 2-for-2 at the plate, including a double, while six other Westfield batters got one hit. Trey Dorton had a double as well. Quentin Markle scored two runs and Collin Lindsey batted in two runs.
Kade Robinson struck out five for the win, going three and two-thirds innings. Cody South pitched in relief, tossing seven strikeouts.
The Shamrocks are 13-1-1 and begin an HCC series Thursday at Zionsville, taking on the 4A No. 8 Eagles.

The Noblesville baseball team scored its biggest win of the season Tuesday, as the Millers stunned Class 4A No. 1 Columbus North 2-1 in a walkoff victory at Don Dunker Field.
The Bull Dogs scored their run in the top of the first inning, and held that 1-0 lead all the way into the seventh inning. Noblesville led off the bottom of the seventh with a double by Dean White. He moved to third base, then scored on a single by Mason Bohland to tie the game.
After holding off Columbus North in the top of the eighth, the Millers loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the inning. Conner Bloss then came up and smacked a single to score Luke Wilson and win the game.
Bohland went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Drew Niswonger hit a double. Jared Crandall got the win in relief, throwing two and a third innings. Starter Michael Stremlaw tossed five strikeouts over five and two-thirds innings.
Noblesville is 8-11 and returns to Hoosier Crossroads Conference action Thursday when it begins a series with Hamilton Southeastern at Ken Seitz Field.

Drew VanOeveren pitched a no-hitter for Hamilton Heights on Tuesday, and the Huskies took care of business at the plate to score a 10-0, five inning Hoosier Conference win over Lewis Cass on Tuesday.
VanOeveren pitched 11 strikeouts and allowed only three walks in the game. He also helped out on offense as well, leading off the second inning with a single and scoring Heights’ first run of the game.
Brayden Elkin scored the second run; both he and VanOeveren went home on Dean Mason’s right field single. The Huskies then added five runs in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth. Mason and Harrison Hochstedler both batted in three runs, Elkin scored three times and Sam Allen was 3-for-4.
Heights is 9-6 and plays at Lewis Cass tonight to complete the series.

Guerin Catholic got stronger as the game went on, coming back from a 3-2 deficit to beat Lapel 10-3 in a Tuesday game that was played at Grand Park.
Both teams scored two runs in the first inning. The Golden Eagles led off the inning with Braden Reel hitting a triple, then Will Fremion blasted a triple to send Reel home. Fremion later scored on Davis Wagner’s right field base hit.
Lapel went up 3-2 in the third inning, but Guerin Catholic jumped back ahead in the fourth inning when Reel connected on his second triple of the game, scoring Adam Novelen and Sam Tabor. Reel later got home on a wild pitch. As a result, GC led 5-3.
Tabor hit a two-run single in the fifth inning, sending Aidan Morse and Novelen home. In the sixth inning, Fremion scored on a wild pitch, then Clay Patton and Ferrucci both got home on a passed ball.
Spencer Wilt pitched five innings for the win, striking out seven.
Guerin Catholic is 7-2 and hosts Park Tudor this afternoon.

Hamilton Southeastern dropped a 10-9 game to Lawrence North Monday at Ken Seitz Field.
The Wildcats got a run in the top of the first inning, but the Royals responded right away in the bottom of the inning when J.T. Mutchner singled in Noah Wolf and Cole Earlewine. That gave Southeastern a 2-1 lead, but Lawrence North took it right back, scoring six runs in the top of the second to lead 7-2.
The Royals scored twice in the bottom of the second, with Payton Hilfiker and Wolf getting home when Earlewine reached on error. Southeastern tied the game in the fourth inning; Hunter Dilts singled in Hilfiker, Mutchner batted Wolf home, then Dilts scored on a passed ball.
With that, HSE had tied the game at 7-7. The Royals went up 9-7 in the fifth inning when Wolf batted in Logan Callaghan and Peyton Lusby. But the Wildcats tied the game in the sixth inning, then doubled in the go-ahead run in the seventh.
Wolf, Dilts and Mutchner all had two hits, with Mutchner batting in three runs and Wolf scoring three.
Southeastern is 8-11-1 and hosts Noblesville on Thursday to begin an HCC series.

In a clash of ranked team, 2A No. 6 University was edged out by 3A No. 4 Western 3-2 Tuesday in a game at Grand Park.
Both teams scored all of their runs in the first inning. The Panthers batted first, putting the Trailblazers down 3-0. University got on the board when Adam Oxley tripled in Quincy Harper. Oxley then scored on a wild pitch. Neither team allowed the other a run for the remainder of the game.
Tyler Galyean pitched six innings, striking out four.
The ‘Blazers are 13-5 and play Thursday at Cathedral.
