Baseball: Fishers stages late comeback for walk-off win over Yorktown

On Monday night, the Fishers Tigers went out of the Hoosier Crossroads Conference to play the Yorktown Tigers and got a test that they were hoping to get at this point in the season, just two weeks from sectional play.
It took a five-run bottom of the seventh for the host Tigers to overcome the visiting Yorktown Tigers, 7-6.
The Yorktown Tigers got on the board in the first. Cole Temple walked to get started and then Jacob Pruitt reached on a fielder’s choice, moving Temple to second. Hayden Carrow lined out to right for the second out. Temple was then able to head home on a wild pitch for 1-0. Garrett Thurman lined a single to left that scored Pruitt and put Fishers in an early 2-0 deficit.
Fishers got their offense going in the third when JP Preston hit a pop fly to left and that allowed Carson Dunn to score on the play to cut the visiting Tigers’ lead to 2-1.
The host Tigers would even the score in the fifth. Dom Oliverio walked and then stole second and then advanced to third on a JP Preston ground out. Oliverio would head for home to tie it up 2-2 when Curtis Kearschner doubled to left with two outs.
Jackson Furnish walked to start the sixth for Yorktown. Carrow would reach base on a walk and that would get courtesy runner Peyton Fields to second. Thurman walked to load the bases. Jacob Grim walked, scoring Fields to allow Yorktown to regain the edge, 3-2.
Brayden Foltz would also walk and Carrow scored for 4-2.
Cole Temple pushed the visiting Tigers’ lead to 5-2 with a leadoff home run to left. They would push it to 6-2 when Thurman doubled to left to plate Pruitt.
Fishers was in quite the hole heading into its last at-bat, down by four.
Preston singled up the middle into center. Joe Hietpas would reach on an error by Temple at shortstop that gave the Tigers two aboard.
Kearschner next lined a two-run single to left, scoring both Preston and Hietpas, cutting it to 6-4.
Jack Brown was hit by a pitch, advancing Kearschner to second. Jack Backofen laid down a sacrifice bunt and reached safely on an error by Carrow at first to load the bases.
Joey Brenczewski would tie the game 6-6 when he lined a grounder to right, scoring both Kearschner and Brown.
Carson Dunn would become the hero. Dunn hit a walk-off single that scored Backofen for a wild five-run home half of the seventh, giving Fishers a 7-6 win over Yorktown.
Yorktown drops to 13-7 on the season and showed it could be a real threat in the Class 3A state tournament.
Kearschner led with two hits, a double and three RBI’s, while Brenczewski drove in two. Cody Jones earned the win with five innings pitched with eight strikeouts.
Fishers improved its record to 8-3 against non-conference opponents.

Hamilton Heights has been putting together some solid baseball in the past few weeks and it’s starting to show that the Huskies are getting into state tournament form at the right time.
After splitting the first two games of this Hoosier Conference series on April 26 and 27, the Huskies went on the road and grabbed a 4-2 win at Northwestern to take the series two games to one.
Dean Mason led off the game with a walk. Two batters later, Sam Allen tripled to center that would score Kaleb Murry for an early Heights 1-0 lead. They would add another in the first on a double to center to send Allen home to put the Tigers on their heels, 2-0.
Northwestern struck right back in the home half of the first. Cole Van Natter led off by lining a single to center and he would soon steal second. Cole Wise grounded out to short and that allowed Van Natter to go home, cutting it to 2-1.
The Tigers tied the game up in the bottom of the third. Wise singled to score Kai Jackson for a 2-2 game.
Hamilton Heights came right back in the top of the fourth to regain the lead that they would not give back.
Alex Eubanks lined a single to center. Cooper Vondersaar bunted for the first out to get Eubanks to second. Landon Hurley came through with a run-scoring, hard-hit grounder to short. Wise committed an error that allowed Eubanks to score for 3-2.
The Huskies would put the icing on the series with Sam Allen producing again, this time on an infield single to score Kaleb Murray for the final score of 4-2.
Alex Rickey started on the mound for Heights and gave up three hits through three innings, striking out a pair. Harrison Hochstedler earned the win in his four innings, whiffing eight Tigers and walking none.
Northwestern (11-5, 5-4 HC) had won four of five before dropping the series finale versus Heights. The Tigers head to Taylor (7-10-1) on Thursday for their next game.
Hamilton Heights (10-4, 5-3 HC) has now won eight of its last nine and is peaking at the right time with the state tournament near. The Huskies host Anderson (12-8) today.

On a turf field like Kokomo’s Municipal Stadium, where the ball is usually bouncing all over, creating opportunities for multiple runs from either team, that wouldn’t be the case on Tuesday night.
The host Wildkats were able to tame the Noblesville Millers, who had won three in a row and seven of their last nine prior to dropping Tuesday night’s non-conference tilt, 1-0.
Freshman Ethan Dorsey got the starting nod for Noblesville. He would go five strong innings, allowing four hits, striking out three and walking just one.
On this night, it would be a complete game shutout for Ashton Sexton that gave the home team the win. Sexton went the distance for seven frames, only giving up four hits, fanning five with one walk.
Dameion Deis led off the bottom of the third, singling to left. John Curl would repeat a single to left that would score Deis for the lone run of the game for Kokomo.
Luke Wilson accounted for half of Noblesville’s hits, going 2-for-3. Nolan Decker and Bryce Riggs each added a single.
Kokomo (10-11) won its third game in a row and hosts Marion (0-13) today.
Noblesville drops to 11-9 and will get back to Hoosier Crossroads Conference action on Thursday when they host Brownsburg (12-4, 6-2 HCC). This will be the first of the two game series, which proves to be pivotal for second place in the conference standings.
