Baseball: Big fifth inning sends HSE past ‘Rocks

Hamilton Southeastern used a four-run fifth inning to win an all-county and Hoosier Crossroads Conference baseball game over Westfield 5-3 on Thursday at Ken Seitz Field.
The Shamrocks scored one run in each of the first two innings. Keaton Mahan led off the game with a triple, then scored on Trey Dorton’s RBI groundout. In the second inning, Maximus Webster singled in Mahan, and Westfield led 2-0.
The Royals got on the board in the third inning when Chugga Rosario hit a solo home run. The ‘Rocks added a run in the fourth inning; Webster doubled Dorton home.
Southeastern then took over in the bottom of the fifth. Ty Bradle doubled in Maddux Bach for the inning’s first run, then Bradle tied the game when Landon Riekhof reached on error. Riekhof later scored on another error, then Harrison Dilts got home on a wild pitch.
Bradle finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate. Brady Strawmeyer pitched three innings for the win.
Webster was 3-for-4. Gage Stanifer went four and two-thirds innings, tossing 12 strikeouts.
The Royals are 8-14, while Westfield is 12-8. The two teams play each other tonight to conclude the series, this time at the Shamrocks’ field.

Fishers cruised to a 6-3 HCC home win over Franklin Central on Thursday.
The Tigers began with three runs in the first inning. Jack Brown sent a two-RBI single into center field, scoring Joey Brenczewski (who led off the inning with a double) and Carson Dunn. Jack Brown later scored when Curtis Kearschner reached on error.
Fishers added a pair of runs in the third inning; Caulin Brown scored when JP Preston hit a sacrifice fly, then Gavin Clayton singled Kearschner home. Dunn scored on an error in the fourth inning.
Preston also hit a double. Tate Warner pitched a complete game, striking out nine and allowing only four hits.
The Tigers are 10-1 in HCC play and 18-5 overall, and travel to Franklin Central tonight to complete the series.

Noblesville fell to Brownsburg 4-1 Thursday in an HCC game at Don Dunker Field.
The Millers scored their run in the first inning; Trevor Corbett scored on Nolan Decker’s RBI fielder’s choice. The Bulldogs tied the game in the third inning, then scored three runs in the fourth to take the lead.
Jacob Edwards and Josh Kern each hit a double.
Noblesville is 11-10 and plays at Brownsburg tonight to complete the series.

Sheridan dropped a tough game to Tipton 11-10, Thursday at the Blackhawks’ field.
The Blue Devils scored two runs in the top of the first inning, but Sheridan with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Sebastian Salazar got the first run on a balk, Silas DeVaney singled in Zach Bales, then Caleb Alexander got home on a passed ball.
Tipton put up four runs in the second inning to lead 6-3, but the ‘Hawks came back again, tying the game in the third inning. Nathan Brown got home on Silas DeVaney’s sacrifice fly, Evan Grinstead singled Bales home and Jack Crail scored on a passed ball.
Sheridan took the lead in the fourth inning with two runs. Bales doubled Brown home, then DeVaney’s base hit scored Bales. The Blackhawks added two more runs in the fifth, with Salazar smacking a solo home run and Dayne Voege batting Alexander home. But the Blue Devils scored four runs in the seventh inning to get the win.
DeVaney finished the game 3-for-5, with Bales scoring three runs. Salazar pitched five innings, striking out 11.
Sheridan is 8-9 for the season.

Carmel dropped an 8-2 game to Harrison Thursday at Hartman Field.
The Greyhounds scored both of their runs in the fifth inning. Dan Cunningham singled in Adam Buczkowski, then Nathan Williams scored when Tim Haas drew a bases-loaded walk.
Cunningham had two hits. Noah Bradbury threw six strikeouts in four innings.
Carmel is 12-6 and plays today at Roncalli.
