Ascension St. Vincent Carmel earns international accreditation for robotic surgery program

Editor’s note: This story was updated to remove references to Ascension St. Vincent Carmel being the first surgical center in Indiana to receive SRC accreditation. The Reporter learned on Wednesday, March 18 that Parkview Health in Fort Wayne, Ind., received SRC accreditation in 2020.

Ascension St. Vincent Carmel has earned accreditation from Surgical Review Corporation (SRC), an internationally recognized nonprofit organization that accredits hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers for excellence in robotic surgery and patient safety.

The accreditation recognizes Ascension St. Vincent Carmel’s commitment to standardized, evidence-based processes that improve patient outcomes, enhance operational performance, and reduce complications.

“Robotic surgery is not simply about advanced technology – it is about delivering safer, more precise care for our patients,” said Dr. Peter Bustamante, Chief Medical Officer with Ascension St. Vincent North Region. “This accreditation affirms the disciplined processes, teamwork and physician expertise that define our program.”

SRC accreditation standards are directly tied to measurable improvements in patient safety and quality outcomes. In a recent survey, accredited designees reported:

• 71 percent improved patient safety
• 65 percent decreased complications
• 53 percent improved patient satisfaction
• 53 percent higher patient volume
• 47 percent improved efficiency and efficacy
