Arcadia declares 2022 “Year of Sun Safety”

Town shares messages twice a month to help Central Indiana be safer in the sun

The Town of Arcadia is declaring 2022 to be the “Year of Sun Safety.” Employees kicked off this new campaign in January to help both residents and visitors protect themselves when doing outside activities.

“With the opening of our splash pad park last year, Splash on Main, we realized how important it is to spread the word about how to be safe in the sun,” said Arcadia Clerk-Treasurer Jennifer Pickett. “We’re making a commitment to sun safety and skin cancer awareness through this new campaign throughout all of 2022.”

Arcadia is posting flyers in its town hall and at various downtown Arcadia locations twice a month thanks to the American Academy of Dermatology Association’s free educational resources. The town is also posting sun safety tips on its website and social media.

“We wanted to take advantage of the excitement surrounding the Olympic Winter Games,” Pickett said. “People don’t think about sunscreen and other protective measures as much as they should in the winter, but it’s just as important then as it is in the warmer months.”

In December, the Town of Arcadia will partner with a non-profit organization to apply for an American Academy of Dermatology Shade Structure Grant. This program provides support for the installation of permanent shade structures.

“We definitely need this for the new splash pad, as it is under direct sunlight for a good portion of the day in the spring, summer, and fall,” Pickett said.
