Carmel Fire recognizes 25^th anniversary of September 11

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, a day that forever changed our nation and left an enduring mark on generations of Americans.

The Carmel Fire Department once again hosted its annual 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony, brining members of the community together to honor the nearly 3,000 innocent people who lost their lives, and the first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice while answering the call to help others.

Twenty-five years ago, our country was shaken to its core. In the days and weeks that followed, Americans came together in a way that is difficult to describe today. Differences were set aside. Flags appeared everywhere. Neighbors helped neighbors, strangers helped strangers, and there was a renewed sense that, despite our differences, we were one nation and one people.

Since 2001, the Carmel Fire Department has carried on this important tradition of remembrance. Year after year, Carmel firefighters, police officers, public safety personnel, and community members have gathered to pause, reflect, and honor those whose lives were taken that September morning.

The significance of this year’s ceremony cannot be overstated. A quarter century has now passed since the attacks. For those who lived through September 11, the memories remain remarkably vivid – the images, the uncertainty, the grief, and the extraordinary courage, the American pride, resiliency, and unity – all of those emotions come flooding back each year as we remember.

As each new generation of firefighters and police officers take their oaths to serve, something profound is happening: we are now welcoming firefighters and police officers into our ranks who were not even born when 9/11 changed our nation forever. For them, 9/11 is history, something they learned about in school and through the stories of others, rather than something they personally experienced.

Yet, they have chosen to wear the uniform, answer the call, and serve their communities.

That is why Carmel’s annual 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony matters.

Remembering is not about living in the past. It is about making sure the lessons of that day are not lost with the passing of time. It keeps the memory alive. It connects generations. It reminds us that while we cannot change what happened 25 years ago, we can choose to remember, to honor, and to carry those lessons forward.

Never forget means never forgetting!
