NOBLESVILLE – The team champion became obvious as the evening progressed, but there were still plenty of stories to tell from the Hoosier Crossroads Conference boys track and field meet.
Brownsburg was the big story from the meet, which took place Thursday at Noblesville’s Beaver Field. The Bulldogs won five events, including a pair of 1-2 finishes, and scored 165 points to easily claim the team title. Fishers was the runner-up with 88 points, while Noblesville tied for third place by scoring 72 points.
The Tigers won three events, and Tyler Tarter was part of all of them. The junior won two on his own, sweeping the hurdles races. Tarter first took the 110 hurdles in 14.46 seconds, then won the 300 hurdles in a new personal-best time of 38.34 seconds.
“I was super hyped about the 300,” said Tarter. “I PR-ed. I was not expecting a PR, because our week of training was super hard this week.”

Tarter was getting dangerously close to the HCC record of 38.04 seconds set a few years ago. Tarter said he thinks “this is a good point for me to be at,” as he is now looking to get across the 38-second barrier and drop into the 37s.
Tarter joined Leo Morrow, Cavitt Fowler III and Makell Wiggins to win the 4×400 relay. The Fishers team finished in 3 minutes, 24.21 seconds, beating out Brownsburg by 0.14 seconds. Wiggins ran the anchor leg, and he clinched the victory for Fishers.
“I just had to keep pushing,” said Wiggins. “I had to sprint the whole way to win. I saw the Brownsburg guy, he’s coming up on me, and I just had to keep going so I could beat him.”

Noblesville picked up two wins at the HCC meet. Senior Asher Propst won the 3200 run, using a final kick to finish the race in 9:11.88. Propst was running with Fishers’ Sam Quagliaroli for most of the race, but Propst began making his kick with 500 meters to go, and was able to stay in front from that point forward.
“I was a little unsure making with 500 to go,” said Propst. “That’s a little early to make a surge. But I made it and I pushed real hard for 250 meters, tried to keep going. With about 150 to go, I checked behind me to make sure he wasn’t coming.” Propst said in the final 100 meters, he give it “everything I had,” hoping to hold on to “as much of a gap as I could.”

Will Johnston was another winner for the Millers, as he took the pole vault in a leap of 13 feet, 6 inches. Two Brownsburg vaulters also cleared 13-6, but Johnston got the win on fewer misses.
Rapid progress
The most exciting performance of the night came from Hamilton Southeastern’s Rowan Hall. The Royals senior delivered a new meet record in the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 7 inches.
“I have to be extremely focused,” said Hall. “Every time I get up there, I have to breathe, calm down a little bit, run through everything I got to do and then I just got to jump.”
Hall said that his best jump prior to conference was 6-2, so he only set a new record, but shattered his own personal best as well. In fact, Hall has made rapid progress since he began jumping, going from 5-8 as a sophomore to 6-foot as a junior.
Now that he has a record jump under his belt, Hall will likely get more attention from around the state. How does that feel? “Pretty good,” he said.
Southeastern had a superb day in the field. Josiah Bird got a victory in the discus with a throw of 165 feet, 5 inches. Michael Griffith was the long jump winner, with his best jump 22 feet, 6.75 inches. Griffith got past Fishers’ JonAnthony Hall by a half-inch; the Tigers sophomore’s top jump was 22 feet, 6.25 inches.
Westfield had its best results in the field, with Tom Ewing taking second in the shot put and third in the discus. Colin Lakomek placed third in the 800 run.
