Softball: High-scoring slugfest puts Huskies on top, Millers beat Kokomo

The Hamilton Heights softball team won a slugfest over Lewis Cass Thursday, 23-13 in a five-inning home Hoosier Conference East Division game.

The Kings scored three runs in the top of the first inning. The Huskies got one back in the bottom of the inning, with Hailey Hall getting home on a passed ball.

After holding Cass scoreless in the top of the second, Heights erupted for nine runs in the bottom of that inning. Kaylee Rhoton scored on a passed ball, then Emma Blanton ripped a triple into right field to bring in Kassidy Schakel and Morgan Ottinger.

Blanton scored on Taya Trosper’s RBI fielder’s choice. Later, Lily Roush sent a double into center field, scoring Lily Cash, Haaall and Isabel Morrow. Rhoton singled in Roush, and Ottinger’s right field hit brought Natalie Newman home.

The Kings scored four runs in the top of the third to cut Heights’ lead to 10-7. The Huskies got three of those runs back in the bottom of the third. Trosper scored on a passed ball, then Cash got home on another passed ball. Hall scored on Morrow’s RBI groundout, and Heights led 13-7.

A Cass three-run home run got them within 13-10 after the top of the fourth inning. Heights scored two in the bottom of the fourth: Trosper’s RBI groundout brought in Schakel and Cash singled in Blanton.

The Kings added three runs in the top of the fifth to get within 15-13, but the Huskies put up eight runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game. Schakel doubled in Morrow and Roush, Rhoton scored on Ottinger’s RBI fielder’s choice, then Newman (running for Schakel) got home on Trosper’s sacrifice fly. Later, Ottinger scored on an error, Hall singled in Blanton, Cash got home on an error, and Hall scored the game-ending run when Morrow reached on error.

Cash was 4-for-5 at the plate, with Schakel going 3-for-4. Roush hit two doubles, with Schakel and Trosper each hitting one. Cash went four innings for the pitching win, striking out four. Roush pitched the fifth inning, tossing two strikeouts.

Heights is 6-2 in the division and 12-6 overall. The Huskies play Saturday at Taylor.

Noblesville won at Kokomo Thursday by the score of 3-0.

The Millers got a run in the first inning when Mack Harvey doubled in Reis Sjoholm. Addi Emerson singled in Gabby Fowler for a third-inning run. In the fifth inning, Taylor Thompson hit a two-out double, after which Macie Duvall came in to run for her. Emmerson then sent a hit into center field to score Duvall.

Emmerson and Nevaeh Nash both had two hits. Emme Yee went three innings for the pitching win.

Noblesville is 9-8-1 and plays Saturday at Center Grove.

Westfield fell at Center Grove Thursday, 10-0 in five innings.

Makayla Watson had two hits for the Shamrocks, including a double, while Grace Feltz hit a single.

The Shamrocks are 9-9 and host Mount Vernon this evening.
