Softball: Royals beat Millers, HH emerges victorious, ‘Hounds & ‘Hawks fall

The Hamilton Southeastern softball team won an all-county and Hoosier Crossroads Conference game at Noblesville Wednesday 13-0.

The game was scoreless after three innings, but the Royals broke through in a big way in the top of the fourth. Payton Fox led off the inning with a home run. Jenna Chase got on base with a double, and was later sent home by a Madi Yankauskas single. Alex Kiemeyer then blasted a home run to center field, also scoring Paige Gould and Yankauskas. With that, Southeastern led 5-0.

The Royals added three runs in the sixth inning. Yankauskas scored when Addi Justice drew a bases-loaded walk, then Fox’s center field hit brought in Lani Wyrick and Makenna Selm. Southeastern put up five more runs in the seventh: Reese Garland hit a solo homer, Justice bunted in Tessa Sexauer and Wyrick, and Fox hit a second home run to score Justice.

Fox finished the game 3-for-4 and totaled five RBIs. Sexauer also hit a double. Grace Swedarsky pitched a complete game, striking out 10 and allowing two hits.

Reis Sjoholm and Bella Schatko both got hits for the Millers.

Southeastern is 3-1 in HCC play and 13-4 overall, while Noblesville is 3-2 in the conference and 8-8-1 overall. The Royals play another HCC game Friday at Brownsburg, while the Millers play at Kokomo this afternoon.

Hamilton Heights cruised to a Hoosier Conference East Division win at Lewis Cass, 9-2 on Wednesday.

The Kings scored both of their runs in the fifth inning. The Huskies had to wait until the sixth inning to get on the board, but they were unstoppable once they got going. Heights scored three runs in the sixth: Lily Cash got home on an error, Lily Roush batted in Hailey Hall on a left field line drive, then Melanee Forrester brought Roush home with a single.

The Huskies put up six runs in the seventh inning. Morgan Ottinger led off with a single, and she was immediately sent home by Emma Blanton’s base hit. Cash singled Blanton to third base, and Blanton scored after Hall reached on error.

Roush came up next, and her triple sent Cash and Hall home. Roush scored on a wild pitch. Kaylee Rhoton got on base with a left field hit, moved to second base on Forrester’s single, advanced to third on a passed ball, and got home on a hit by Kassidy Schakel.

Cash, Roush and Forrester all had two hits. Roush pitched a complete game, striking out 16 against one walk and four hits.

Heights is 5-2 in the division and 11-6 overall, and hosts Lebanon this afternoon.

Carmel dropped a 12-5 game to Cathedral on Wednesday.

The Irish never trailed, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. The Greyhounds got a run back in the bottom of the first when Lily Sullivan doubled in Alex Longstreth. Both teams scored two runs in the second inning; Mia Fleming doubled in Gracyn Erickson and Fleming got home when Hope McDonald drew a bases-loaded walk.

Cathedral led 4-3 after two innings, then scored eight runs in the final two innings of the game. Carmel scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh. Sullivan got home on Erickson’s RBI fielder’s choice, while Lucy Broughton’s RBI groundout scored Jayden Kleiner.

Longstreth, Sullivan and Kleiner all had two hits. Broughton pitched a compete game, striking out five.

The Greyhounds are 2-11 and host Mooresville on Friday.

Sheridan fell to Carroll 12-2 in a Wednesday Hoosier Heartland Conference game.

The Blackhawks scored one run in the first inning when Mariana Lopez singled in Jacquellynne Bates. Sheridan’s other run came in the fifth inning; Abbi Merritt got home on Lopez’s sacrifice fly.

Merritt had two hits for the game.

Sheridan is 1-15 and plays Friday at Alexandria.
