Blackhawks fall to Chargers at home

The Sheridan softball team nearly made a comeback against North Montgomery on Friday before falling 7-6 in a home game.

The Chargers led 5-0 after the top of the first inning. The Blackhawks got a run back in the bottom of the first; Jacquellynne Bates led off with a triple, then scored when Chaney Smith reached first base on a dropped third strike.

Bates smacked another triple in the third inning, and that one scored Kennedy Zachary. Bates then scored in a repeat of her first-inning run, as Smith again reached first on a dropped third strike.

Abbi Merritt singled in Smith for a fifth-inning run, and Sheridan was within 5-4. A two-run home run put North Montgomery up 7-4 in the top of the seventh. Ashlynn Tryon scored for the ‘Hawks in the bottom of the seventh on a wild pitch, then Merritt also got home on a wild pitch before the Chargers got the third out to end the game.

Maelei Casler, Tryon and Merritt all had one hit. Casler pitched all seven innings, striking out seven.

Sheridan is 1-7 and hosts Elwood Monday.
