‘Rocks softball falls to Cougars in high-scoring game

The Westfield softball team dropped a high-scoring game to Greenfield-Central on Wednesday, 19-12.

The Cougars scored four runs in the top of the first inning. The Shamrocks got three runs in the bottom of the inning: Maggie Roh scored when Grace Fanelli drew a bases-loaded walk, Makayla Watson got home after Allie Dolenc was hit by a pitch, then Cara Snedeker scored after Chloe Tanner reached on error.

Greenfield went up 7-3 with three second-inning runs. Westfield came back with five runs, taking an 8-7 lead after two innings. Ava Kainrath smacked a center field home run, also scoring Roh and Watson. Later, Dolenc and Fanelli scored after Tanner reached on error, and the ‘Rocks had the lead.

The Cougars put up five more runs in the third inning, including a three-run home run, to lead 12-8, then led 16-8 in the fifth inning. Westfield got three runs in the bottom of the fifth: Kainrath singled in Avery Banas, Roh scored on Snedeker’s RBI groundout, then Watson scored on a wild pitch. The Shamrocks got one more run in the seventh inning when Fanelli scored on Tanner’s sacrifice fly.

Roh and Kainrath both finished with two hits, while Watson, Snedeker, Fanelli and Dolenc each had one. Tanner struck out five in four innings.

Westfield is 4-2 and plays three games at Lake Central on Saturday, also playing Kankakee Valley and Mishawaka.
