The Hamilton Heights High School theater students will hold a “Lantern Walk” through Cicero Cemetery from 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, April 22. The walk will include 12 stops at the gravesites of important folks in the history of Jackson Township.
The Reporter will publish a short biography of each of the 12 individuals in our online editions from Wednesday to Saturday for three weeks, concluding April 15.
Dr. Oscar Havens is featured in today’s edition.
“I am Oscar Havens, MD. I was born in Cicero, son of Dr. Edward and Hanna (Clauson) Havens. Like my father and brother, I decided to pursue a medical career, and together the three of us served the community for 73 years. I graduated in 1942 from the Indiana University School of Medicine. I became a diabetic shortly after I began my practice, and served as a specialist in that field. I was a member of the Riverview Hospital staff and the American Diabetic Association. During my career, I delivered a great many of the “Baby Boomers” in the northern Jackson Township area. I am also noted for my athletic abilities as a young adult. I was a guard on the 1932 Cicero Red Devils basketball team that made it to the State Finals that year. My teammates and I were a part of the first class to be inducted into the Hamilton Heights Athletic Hall of Fame.”
