With a theme of “Beach Fun,” Sheridan Elementary School (SES) welcomed the community to Rising Stars 2023 on Feb. 17. Teachers Joelle Cobbs, Lindsey Martin, Candy Hall, and Nina Lechner, who served as directors for the event, shared that they had 23 acts and 48 students participating.

The last in-person Rising Stars was held right before the pandemic, which limited in-person events for a long stretch, so the directors and administration commented that they were excited to be back in person.

Student performances included singing, dancing, gymnastics, magic, puppets, piano, violin, skits, jokes, and more. This is an annual event at Sheridan Elementary.

Fifth-grader Lana Lechner completed her last of six years in Rising Stars this year as an emcee. She shared her insight on the event: “This was the best show yet, and I loved being back in-person. There were so many great acts. It was awesome being an emcee, and I got to work with a great team of fifth-grade emcees: Kensi Jump, Audrey Weir, and Nola Mylet.”

After watching SES students perform to an audience of parents, friends, and staff, Principal Valerie Roberts said, “Rising Stars, our student talent show, has been around for over 20 years! Each year our students seem to improve on the year before with their creativity and talents for all to enjoy! It is amazing to watch students shine in front of their parents and peers. I’m so proud of all of them. Education doesn’t just take place between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. at SES; we want to give our students opportunities to thrive in many settings.”
