After last Thursday’s sectional prelims, the Carmel girls swim team finished their warm-down by saying “Second quarter.”

The Greyhounds were referring to last Saturday’s sectional finals, which is where swimmers can earn a spot at the state meet. Carmel had a fantastic second quarter, as it qualified all 27 of its swims to Friday’s state prelims.

Along the way, the Greyhounds picked up another sectional championship, scoring 589 points. Carmel won all 12 of the events, and got all 27 swims under the state cut time in their respective events.

The ‘Hounds also set five new sectional records. Alexandra Shackell lowered the marks she set in the prelims in both the 50 freestyle 22.42 seconds and the butterfly (52.04 seconds). Carmel also set new records in all three relays. First was the medley relay team of Berit Berglund, Molly Sweeney, Shackell and Meghan Christman (1 minute, 39.26 seconds), then the 200 free relay team of Madelyn Lathrop, Erin Cummins, Sweeney and Grace Dougherty (1:33.82). The 400 free relay team of Cummins, Alexandra Ward, Vivian Wilson and Christman set a new record of 3:23.62.

Other event winners were Lynsey Bowen (200 free), Sweeney (individual medley and breaststroke), Melaina Munson (diving), Cummins (100 free), Ward (500 free) and Berglund (backstroke). Munson advanced to Tuesday’s diving regional at Hamilton Southeastern.

Noblesville finished second at the sectional by scoring 381.5 points. The Millers had six swims qualify for state; their top finish at the sectional was the 200 free relay team placing second. Members of the relay are Caroline Santerre, Maya McDonald, Ellie Hayward and Exley Tricker.
Westfield had two relays qualify for state: The medley relay team of Eliana Hill, Alexandra Irvin, Alexa Boillat and Bridget Mick, and the 200 free relay team of Boillat, Irvin, Mick and Isabella Amaya.

The Millers’ Eryn McMahon finished second in diving, while Carmel’s Helena Gibson was fourth. Both advance to the Southeastern regional.
