The Hamilton Southeastern boys basketball team had a perfect start to the Homestead Tournament on Wednesday, winning both of its pool games.
In their first game, the Royals sailed past South Bend St. Joseph 80-38. Southeastern had no trouble in the opening half, leading 50-21 by halftime. The Royals outscored the Indians in each of the four quarters, and poured in another 20 points in the third period for a 70-32 lead.
Four players reached double figures for HSE. Deion Miles led with 15 points and five assists, while Reph Stevenson added 14 points and six rebounds. Braeden Totten scored 11 points and Michael Griffith had 10. Eli Carlson collected six rebounds and Donovan Hamilton dished out four assists; the Royals had 26 assists as a team.
Southeastern had it much tougher in its second game, needing overtime to get past Munster 62-61. The Royals skipped off to an 11-3 lead, then finished the first quarter ahead 14-9. The Mustangs cut that lead to 25-23 by halftime, but Southeastern was back up 36-32 at the end of three quarters.
Munster came back again, pouring in 23 points in the fourth period to tie the game at 55-55 by the end of regulation. The Royals edged out the Mustangs 7-6 in the extra period.
Stevenson had an outstanding game, with 26 points, five rebounds and two blocked shots. Totten added 14 points, seven assists and five rebounds. Hamilton led the rebounds with six, while Eli Robinson collected five rebounds. Miles dished out five assists.
Southeastern is 4-4 and completes pool play this morning when it takes on Homestead. The Royals will then have a placement game that evening.
