Huskies take back game from Lapel in second half

Hamilton Heights took care of business in the second half to score a 46-38 victory over Lapel Tuesday in a home game.

The Bulldogs led 24-21 at halftime, scoring 12 points in each quarter. The Huskies turned that around in the second half, holding Lapel to seven points in the next quarters, while scoring 25 of their own.

“Very gritty performance by our girls tonight,” said Heights coach Keegan Cherry. “Really proud of the toughness we showed. Lapel has a nice team.”

Camryn Runner had 12 points in the second half, while Ella Hickok scored seven, including a 5-of-5 effort from the free-throw line. Runner finished with 19 points and was 4 of 4 from the line. Hickok and Kaylee Rhoton both had nine points, with Rhoton making three 3-pointers. Katie Brown had two 3s.

Cherry said that Heights’ ability to offset the Bulldogs’ size with Hadleigh Cherry and Kassidy Schakel was a key to the game.

“Kaylee Rhoton provided timely scoring early,” said Keegan Cherry. “Ella was great leading us at the point and her on ball defense was excellent. Katie Brown provided nice minutes and opened some things up with her ability to stretch the floor. We battled some foul trouble and got a key stop with Taylor Harley on the floor. Camryn Runner was great again. Her ability to score at all three levels is phenomenal, especially against the defense she faces. But credit to her teammates, they are simply about winning. With zero care who gets the credit.”

The Huskies are 11-2 and are scheduled to play Blackford Thursday night.
