The Westfield boys basketball team began its season Saturday with an intriguing matchup at CSI Gymnasium.
The Shamrocks hosted Kokomo in a re-match of last season’s Class 4A Logansport regional championship. The Wildkats won the regional, but Westfield turned the tables on Saturday, coming back to beat Kokomo 47-39.
The first half was all defense, as the Wildkats led 6-4 after one quarter and 14-10 at halftime. The Shamrocks chipped that lead down to 26-24 by the end of the third period, then overtook Kokomo by outscoring the Wildkats 23-13 in the fourth. Westfield took care of business at the free-throw line, making 11 of 13 shots during the fourth quarter.
Three Shamrocks players scored in double figures. Trey Buchanan led with 15 points, followed by Alex Romack with 13 and Sam Bishop with 12. Bishop also led the rebounds with seven, while Romack collected five and also handed out five assists.
Westfield travels to Pendleton Heights on Tuesday.
