University junior Quinn Steiner made his first career start a memorable night, making eight three pointers on his way to a game high 24 points as the Trailblazers rolled past Bethesda Christian 78-46 Friday night.
David Howard had 17 points and a team high seven rebounds while Sam Mervis had nine points and five assists and Foster Flamion had nine points as University improved to 5-0 on the season. The Patriots fell to 2-3.
Coach Brandon Lafferman was pleased at how his underclassmen performed. “Tonight was a chance for guys who normally don’t play a lot of minutes to step up. I’m really happy for Quinn (Steiner) in his first varsity start to have a great game. Eric (Major), Eyal (Friedman) and Max (Greenamoyer) played well off the bench and gave us a lift.”
Univeristy scored four seconds in to the game when Steiner controlled the opening tip and found Flamion for a lay-in and University led the rest of the game. It was the first of 21 assists in the game for the Blazers, who made 26 baskets. University led 15-5 after the first quarter and led by as many as 17 in the second quarter before taking a 29-17 halftime advantage.
The Trailblazers ended any doubt in the third quarter, putting up 30 points in the period and coasted home to the win. Hot shooting University made 63 percent of their field goals, including 14 of 23 (61 percent) of their three point attempts.
The win was University’s ninth consecutive over Bethesda Christian and the Trailblazers hold an 11-6 all-time series lead over the Patriots.
University will play a PAAC North game tonight, traveling to Anderson to take on Liberty Christian in the nightcap of girl-boy doubleheader. The girls game tips at 6 p.m.
