The Sheridan girls basketball team opened its season Thursday at Monrovia, falling a close game by the score of 47-42.
The Bulldogs led 15-11 after the first quarter and extended that advantage to 23-17 by halftime. Sophomore Kenzie Garner, who was a starter for the Blackhawks during her freshman year, scored six points in the first quarter.
Sheridan played even with Monrovia in the second half, but the Bulldogs were able to hold on for the win. Garner had an outstanding second half, making four 3-pointers and scoring 16 points, to give her a game total of 22 points.
Chaney Smith and Nova Cross also each made one 3-pointer. Cross scored seven points.
The Blackhawks are back in action next Friday, Nov. 11, when they open Hoosier Heartland Conference play at Carroll.
