Guerin Catholic had a smashing season debut on Friday, overwhelming McCutcheon 45-21 at the Eagles Nest.
The Golden Eagles scored first, when Luke Moody punched the ball in from the one-yard line. The Mavericks answered with a nine-yard run, but GC’s Cooper Navarro answered back by scoring from four yards. Evan Guenthner made both extra-point kicks, and he was just getting started as Guerin Catholic led 14-7 at the end of the first.
Both teams continued to match each other in the second quarter. McCutcheon’s Brad Gagnon scored on a 20-yard run, but a 20-yard pass play from Ryan Zimmerman to Alex Gibbs gave the Golden Eagles another touchdown.
Gagnon struck again for a 21-yard rushing score, once again tying the game. Justin Zdobylak answered that with a three-yard touchdown run, and that would put Guerin in front for good. The Golden Eagles led 28-21 at halftime.
Guerin Catholic added another touchdown in the third quarter, with Zimmerman getting the one-yard quarterback sneak. Zimmerman then threw a 52-yard scoring pass to Will Fremion for a fourth-quarter touchdown.
Guenthner made the extra point after each touchdown, giving him a perfect 6-for-6 mark on the night. Guenthner then kicked a field goal to finish the GC scoring in the fourth quarter.
Zimmerman had an outstanding game, completing two-thirds of his pass attempts (26-of-39) for 363 yards. Jack Cherry had the most catches with 11, while Fremion totaled 140 yards with his six receptions. Zdobylak led the rushing with 92 yards.
The Golden Eagles travel to Lafayette Central Catholic next Friday to play for the Bishop’s Cup.
