February 17, 1937 – May 2, 2022
Nancy Cowan, 85, Cicero, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2022, with her family at her side.
She was born on February 17, 1937, in Indianapolis to Donald and Mary (Fisher) Cusick. At four years of age, Nancy and her parents moved to Cicero, where she resided the rest of her life. Nancy’s father was a funeral director and her parents had purchased the funeral home in Cicero. The family lived above the funeral home as many funeral home owners did at that time. That introduced Nancy to a new way of life, as it was necessary to be very quiet at times, and in that era many funerals lasted two or three days.
She attended Cicero Elementary School, then Jackson Central High School and graduated with the Class of 1955. Nancy then attended Indiana Business College. Her first job was with Herff Jones Company in Indianapolis.
Nancy was always a smiling, fun-loving person. She loved to play jokes on someone and also loved to be the recipient of a good joke. Her bubbly personality resulted in her having many friends and one friend even wrote a booklet about their escapades. During her high school years everyone knew Nancy and of Nancy – all good!!!
She was an active member of Cicero Christian Church and the Red Hat Society. She liked to read, travel, garden, have dinner with her lady friends, and spend time with her family. And her uplifting personality endured until the end of her life.
She married J.R. Cowan on February 22, 1957 and began her new role as wife and later as mother. Being an industrious couple, she and her husband became owners and operators of Cowan & Cusick Hardware, Cowan Hallmark Store, and the Cowan Insurance Agency, all located in Cicero.
Surviving her are two sons, Mark (Victoria) Cowan of Noblesville, and Toby (Christine) Cowan of Cicero; grandchildren, Joshua Cowan, Elisha Cowan, Olivia Cowan, Jacob Cowan and Christopher Davey; eight great-grandchildren; and a nephew, Charles Burgan.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a daughter, Lori Cowan; and a son, D.J. Cowan.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 7, 2022, at Hartley Funeral Home Cicero Chapel, 209 W. Jackson St., Cicero, with John Knapp officiating. A time of visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of the services. Burial will follow the services at Cicero Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Mephibosheth Ministry, c/o Cicero Christian Church, 1715 Stringtown Pike, Cicero, IN 46034.
