Softball: ‘Hounds, Millers split at Carmel Invite

The Carmel softball team split a pair of games at its own Invitational on Saturday.
In a morning game, the Greyhounds fell to Class 4A No. 1 Roncalli 10-2. Carmel hit two home runs; Sophie Esposito led off the bottom of the first inning with a center field homer. Hope McDonald hit a right field home run in the seventh inning. Lily Sullivan also hit a single.
The ‘Hounds won their second game in wild fashion, beating Penn 12-10. The Kingsmen scored two runs in the top of the first inning. Carmel erased that in the second inning when McDonald smacked a two-run homer, also sending Elsa Morrison home.
Penn led 6-2 midway through the fourth inning, but the Greyhounds took control in the bottom of the fourth with six runs, taking the lead for good. Ella Ohrvall singled in Paxton Law, then Lily Sullivan’s left field line drive scored Ohrvall and Esposito. McDonald then blasted a double with the bases loaded, bringing in Morrison, Kylie Cunningham and Sullivan.
Carmel added two runs each in the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, Ohrvall doubled in Esposito, then later scored on Cunnigham’s RBI groundout. McDonald got home in the sixth inning on Maddie Stacy’s RBI groundout, and Lucy Broughton followed that with a solo home run. Penn scored four runs in the top of the seventh before Carmel got the last two outs.
Ohrvall was 3-for-5 at the plate, and McDonald totaled five RBIs. Law pitched four innings for the win, while Broughton threw five strikeouts in relief.
The Greyhounds are 7-5 and host Ben Davis on Tuesday.

Noblesville also split its Saturday games at the Carmel Invitational.
First, the Millers lost to Castle 6-3. The Knights scored five runs in the second inning. Noblesville got on the board in the third inning when Tatum Ball scored on Bella Schatko’s RBI fielder’s choice. Scout Duplaga led off the fourth inning with a home run, then Taylor Thompson doubled in Schatko in the fifth inning; Schatko had gotten on base with a double.
The Millers cruised past Penn 11-2 in their second game. Noblesville scored its first two runs in the second inning, with Carly Motz batting in Maakena Pohlo, then Kinsey Pfeiffer sent Motz home with a single.
Gabby Fowler scored a run in the fourth inning. Schatko got Reis Sjoholm home with a fifth-inning double, then Duplaga doubled in Schatko. In the sixth inning, Schatko batted in Tatum Ball, then was scored by Thompson’s single.
The Millers sprinted to the finish with four runs in the seventh inning. Fowler led off with a home run, Lala Blower doubled in Lauren DeRolf, then Blower and Erin Clark scored after Schatko reached on error.
Pfeiffer also hit a double. Lulu Van Beek pitched a complete game for the win.
Noblesville is 7-4 and hosts New Palestine on Monday.

Hamilton Southeastern went 1-1 at the Whiteland Warrior Invitational on Saturday.
The Royals dropped their first game, 8-2 to the Warriors. Southeastern scored both of its runs in the third innings. Taylor Larson singled in Emma Vance, then Lani Wyrick scored on Jenna Chase’s RBI groundout. Larson was 3-for-3 at the plate, while Wyrick had two hits.
The Royals rebounded with a 6-5 win over Brownstown Central. Southeastern got on the board quickly with four runs in the first inning. Jenna Chase singled in Lani Wyrick, then Paige Gould cracked a two-run RBI to send Payton Fox and Chase home. Maddie Bucher scored when Tessa Sexauer reached on error.
Brownstown came back to lead 5-4 in the fourth inning. Southeastern tied the game in the fifth inning when Gould singled in Chase. The Royals won the game in the seventh inning when Lucy Hahn hit a walkoff double to score Bucher.
Vance also hit a double. Tori Donato pitched a complete game, striking out eight
Southeastern its 6-7 and hosts Fishers Tuesday in the Mudsock game.

Westfield won two games at the Kokomo Invitational on Saturday.
First, the Shamrocks cruised past Huntington North 11-1 in a five-inning game. Westfield scored six runs in the second inning, while Avery Parker hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning. Kenzie Hiatt had three hits, and got the pitching win.
The ‘Rocks took care of Silver Creek 6-3 in their second game. Parker had another great game, going 3-for-3, including a home run, and driving in two runs. Samantha Breaux hit a double. Morgan Squires threw eight strikeouts in six innings.
Westfield is 9-4 and plays Tuesday at Noblesville.

Fishers dropped two games Saturday at the Center Grove Invitational.
The Tigers fell to Columbus North 5-3 in their first game. Karyn Trice hit a triple, while Nyah Duplessis and Kaylee Kardash both hit a double; Kardash also batted in two runs. Katie Murray tossed eight strikeouts.
Fishers lost its second game to Center Grove 5-1. Hannah Abbott scored the Tigers’ run in the second inning. Sophie Schoch had two hits.
On Friday, Fishers dropped a 15-3, six-inning game to Lawrence North. Schoch had two hits, while Murray hit a double, and pitched three innings with eight strikeouts.
The Tigers are 3-8 and play the Mudsock game Tuesday at Hamilton Southeastern.
