The indoor track and field season started this past weekend with several Hamilton County schools competing in qualifiers for the Hoosier State Relays, which take place March 26 at Indiana University.
Westfield was the first team out of the blocks, as the Shamrocks competed at the opening HSR Qualifier at Indiana Wesleyan University last Friday. Westfield picked up two wins, with the boys 4×400 relay and 4×800 relay teams each taking first in their respective event.
The Shamrocks returned to Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday for the second HSR Qualifier. Hamilton Heights and Noblesville joined them, as did the Carmel girls team.
The Huskies boys had a great day in the field, winning two events. Colin Wilson won the shot put with a huge throw of 56 feet, 3 inches, while Peyton McQuinn triumphed in the pole vault. Westfield’s boys also got a victory in the distance medley relay event (1200, 400, 800, 1600).
In the girls meet, Carmel was first in the 4×400 and 4×800 relays, while Noblesville picked up two field event wins. Hannah Alexander won the shot put and Laina Lillge was first in the pole vault. Westfield’s Liz Smith was a winner in the 3200 run.
Guerin Catholic also competed Saturday at the Red Devil Classic HSR Qualifier at the University of Indianapolis. The Golden Eagles boys team picked up a victory in the 4×800 relay.
