Wrestling sectionals: ‘Hounds win seventh straight title, Huskies get first team win since 2009

Two Hamilton County schools won wrestling sectional championships on Saturday.
One of the schools continued a long dynasty, while the other school claimed a title for the first time in over a decade.
Carmel won its seventh consecutive sectional championship, scoring 267.5 points to win at Frankfort’s Case Arena. The Greyhounds pulled away in the placement rounds with six wrestlers winning individual titles, and that helped Carmel finish comfortably ahead of runner-up Hamilton Southeastern’s 215 points. It’s the 27th sectional title for the Greyhounds in program history.
The ‘Hounds started the finals with two champions, as 106-pound sophomore Tamir Halevi and 113-pound junior Gavin Thompson winning both their matches by fall. That gave Carmel bonus points. Isaac Ward was the next Greyhounds champion, taking the 126-pound match by a 3-1 decision. Carmel then had three middle weights win all in a row, and all by pin: Nayl Sbay at 145, Eitan Halevi at 152 and Nathan Powell at 160.
The Greyhounds had 12 wrestlers finish in the top four, thus qualifying them for next Saturday’s North Montgomery regional. Caleb Mattingly (120) and Michael Major (132) both placed second; Luke Farling (138), Joseph Del Busto (195) and Jack Milligan (285) both finished third and Samuel Johnson (182) took fourth.
Southeastern had three individual champions and qualified 11 wrestlers on to the regional. The Royals were solid in the heavier weights, with Ryan Cast winning the 170-pound championship match by fall. Max Broom won the 195 final with a pin, and Dom Burgett toughed out a 2-1 decision for the title at 285.
Three Southeastern wrestlers finished as runners-up: Zach Lang at 138 pounds, De Shawn Ternoir at 160 and Charlie Irish at 220. Third-place Royals were Nick Anderson (113) and Ryan Hartig (145), while Tyler Jackson (106), Riley Fredericksen (132) and Nick Jakubs (152) all placed fourth.
Westfield finished a close third as a team, scoring 212 points. The Shamrocks had two champions, starting with Braxton Vest, who won the 120-pound title match by fall. Ike O’Neill then claimed the 138-pound title by a 5-4 decision in the final.
Westfield qualified 12 wrestlers out to the regional. Runners-up were Chase Camire (106), Porter Temples (113) and Mihail Platonov (285). Four more Shamrocks finished in third place: Thadeus O’Neill (132), Jason Rooney (152), Austin McClure (182) and Charlie Woodward (220). Westfield’s fourth-place finishes were Elijah Frei (160), Jackson Anderson (170) and Mikeah Webster (195).
Fishers placed fourth as a team with 114.5 points and had seven regional qualifiers. Griffin Ingalls (126) and Zachary Streuder (145) led the way with runner-up finishes. Placing third were Chayce Yant (106), Quenton Riley (120) and James Carrol (170), while Aiden Lamb (113) and Teyon Leonard (138) both were fourth.
Sheridan’s team placed a strong fifth, scoring 111.5 points. Peyton Cross won the 220-pound title with a first-period fall, and he led four Blackhawks to qualify for the regional.
Jacob Jones was the runner-up at 182, while Austin Bond (126) and Noah Ehrie (145) each took fourth.

Hamilton Heights won its first sectional championship since 2009 at the Elwood sectional, where it pulled away in the later stages of the placement round after battling with Noblesville throughout the day. It’s the 12th championship for Heights in program history.
The Huskies scored 255.5 team points to the Millers’ 234.5 points. Heights also had six champions and qualified 12 wrestlers on the Pendleton Heights regional next Saturday.
Isaac Kuhn was the first Huskies winner, as he took the 120-pound championship match with a 9-0 major decision. Heights then got back-to-back wins, first at 138 when Carson Fettig won his final in an 8-4 decision and Michael Cain got a 6-5 tiebreak victory at 145 pounds.
Jimmy Lacey won at 170 with a championship-round fall, and Evan Tilton scored a technical fall win in the 182 championship. Tilton is unbeaten for the year at 39-0. Josh Brown won at 220 by a 13-6 decision.
Cooper Doucette (106) and Charles Brown (160) both finished as runners-up for Heights. Mason Moran placed third at 285. Three more Huskies placed fourth: Alex Furst at 126, Jaylan Pugh at 132 and Andy Lienemann at 195.
Noblesville had one champion and qualified 12 wrestlers out to the regional. Austin Hastings won the 195-pound title with a first-period fall in the championship match.
Six more Millers finished as runners-up: Gage Gulley (145), Carter Richardson (152),  Caleb Dean (170), Seth Stone (182), Jacob Long (220) and Jacob Etchison (285). Noblesville had five more wrestlers take third place: AJ Kramer (106), Josh Kauzlick (113), Aidan Howell (120), Keaton Sepiol (132) and Christian James Livingston (138).
Guerin Catholic took seventh as a team by scoring 64 points. Two Golden Eagles wrestlers advanced to the regional: Peter Nguyen took second at 113 and James Brooks finished fourth at 170.
