Fueled by a breakout and standout performance from one of Indiana’s leading freshmen, Fishers got two victories in Fort Wayne on Tuesday.
In their first game, the Class 4A No. 4 Tigers beat 4A No. 5 Homestead in a close game, 50-48. It was back and forth all the way through: Fishers led 12-10 after the first quarter, with the Spartans going up 25-23 at halftime. The Tigers jumped ahead 41-34 after three periods, with Jeffrey Simmons scoring nine points during that period. Homestead made fourth-quarter run, but Fishers held the Spartans off.
Simmons scored 17 points, while Charlie Smith added 12. Jalen Haralson also scored 12 points, including six in the fourth period. That was just a warm-up, however.
In their second contest of the day, the Tigers cruised past Carroll 82-58. The story of the game was Haralson, as he poured in 43 points for Fishers, easily a career high in the freshman’s nine-game high school career.
Haralson scored 14 points in the first quarter alone, actually outscoring the Chargers by himself, as they had 12 points. Simmons also added a basket, making the first-period score 16-12. Haralson continued to pour it on in the second quarter, adding another 15 points. The Tigers led 43-28 at the break.
Fishers added another 22 points in the third quarter for a 65-40 advantage. Haralson scored nine in the third, and finished with five more points in the fourth quarter. For the game, Haralson made three 3-pointers and was 12-of-14 from the free-throw line.
Simmons scored 16 points.
The Tigers are 8-1 and off until next Wednesday, Dec. 29, when they play at the Huntington North tournament.
